The remarks made by Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara about his wife, Latifa al-Droubi, received significant attention on social media, especially when he mentioned that she lived with him in "caves and difficult places," and that they moved between about 49 homes over 14 years. Clips of the interview were widely circulated across various platforms.
Al-Shara's comments came during a meeting with his wife and a delegation of Syrian women in Damascus yesterday (Sunday), as part of the celebration of Eid al-Adha 2025, according to a video published by the Syrian news agency "SANA."
Al-Shara said: "My wife lived with me in caves for 14 years... and we moved to 49 residences, averaging one home every 3 months; it is difficult for a woman to endure this." He added, "If I wanted to recall some of my personal experience, my dear wife was with me throughout this difficult period we went through; perhaps we got married under extraordinary circumstances in 2012."
He pointed out that they lived in very difficult places, like caves, while also having good places depending on work conditions. He said, "I tried many times to convince her to move to a safer place for her and the children, but she always refused and remained steadfast."
Al-Shara addressed his guests, saying: "Today we are sitting here, but before we reached this place, we went through very harsh conditions, and at every stage, at every moment, she was by my side, steadfast. I ask God to reward her with all good and to keep her steadfast, and God willing, we will continue in the second phase of this journey in building and developing the country, and that the role of women will be fundamental in this place." He considered that what Mrs. al-Droubi has provided embodies the vital role that Syrian women play in facing challenges, emphasizing her central position in building the family and society.
The Syrian president stated that their shared experience represents a bright image of loyalty and struggle, calling for highlighting the stories of Syrian women who stood firmly alongside their husbands during pivotal moments in the country's history.
He affirmed that Syria is currently undergoing a phase of state-building, and women occupy a fundamental role in it; they are half of society, as it is said. Without women, the process of human existence would not continue, and in the moments we focus on rebuilding the state, the role of women must certainly be a fundamental aspect of society.
