He is from that beautiful generation that passed through the paths of his childhood as a reading student under the light of an oil lamp; that generation that wrote the letters of the alphabet in the sand and traced them in the air, before the world was invaded by the PDF program and its relatives from the Office family.
In the middle of one night in the past, he woke up to the voice of his kind lady mother addressing him: "Books... books..." And when a puzzled smile appeared on his face, he asked her: "What is it, Mom?" With her beautiful smile, she replied: "You have been mumbling words for a while now, and all we understood was 'books... books...' Before he could inquire further, she interrupted him, saying: "Go back to sleep so you can prepare for the trip to Aden tomorrow morning... Your brother wants you to accompany him."
He nodded his head in agreement, and when his mother left the room, sleep abandoned him, and thick imaginations surrounded him: Aden and its alleys, its libraries, and the treasures hidden on its shelves that only those afflicted with a love for books know their value. He imagined himself wandering among the books like a child in a city made of candy, not knowing where to start or how it would all end.
When he arrived in Aden, he began to execute his secret program away from his brother. He would sneak into its libraries quietly like a hungry prairie wolf waiting for its prey far from its peers. When he hid his new books, it was nothing but an escape from the ridicule of those who did not want him to be this way, until the books piled up on the shelves of his room, some of them worn out, but a lover is often generous with what he loves.
He often faced mockery and teasing mixed with affection from relatives and friends because of his extensive reading and passion for books. He would hear the same question repeated: "What will reading do for you?" Sometimes he would get angry, but most of the time, he would simply shake his head, believing that it was calmer and more beneficial than getting into a futile argument and a discussion he did not like or want.
He lived in a small, peaceful village, in a beautiful house that loved reading and contained books; even their sheep had a share in that story. Some would stand in front of his room's door and approach him when he sat leaning against the wall of the house, engrossed in his book. One of them would try to snatch the book from him, and he would wonder to himself whether it wanted to read too or if it just wanted to devour it... for sheep love paper and sometimes chew it like gum.
One winter evening, he sat with some friends in the village, talking to them about the joy of reading and the wide windows it opens to life. It was a conversation he loved while they saw it as a cause for boredom. He told them he had read this and that many books, and some of them were either skeptical or amazed, while they all agreed on one question: "What did you gain from all that?" Amid their noisy conversation, his little brother came running, panting: "Come home... we have a surprise for you..." Imaginations raced in his head... perhaps a gift of books had arrived for him... perhaps his siblings had planned a small celebration in honor of what he had read last year... perhaps, and perhaps, and perhaps, until he reached home, where his siblings greeted him with loud laughter and a single cheer: "Congratulations... the sheep ate your books!"
