Official media in Vietnam revealed today (Saturday) that 34 people have died after a tourist boat sank in stormy weather in Ha Long Bay, stating that the boat "Winder Sea" was carrying 53 people, including 5 crew members, during a tour in Ha Long Bay, which is a popular destination for visitors.
The media explained that at around 2 PM local time (0700 GMT), shortly after the storm "Vipa" approached the country over the South China Sea, the boat sank, indicating that reports of strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning in the area had been received.
The local newspaper "VN Express" reported that most of the tourists on board the boat were from the capital, Hanoi, and no official announcement has been made regarding the nationalities of the tourists as emergency crews continue to search for survivors. It noted that the boat was carrying 48 tourists and five crew members, and 12 people were rescued, including a 14-year-old boy who was saved after four hours of being trapped in the hull of the overturned vessel. Additionally, 34 bodies have been recovered, and 7 people are still missing.
The newspaper stated that the boat capsized due to strong winds, explaining that most of the passengers were tourists, including about 20 children from Hanoi, the capital of the country.
However, the Vietnamese government news agency quoted local authorities as saying that emergency teams rescued 11 people and recovered 27 bodies, including 8 children.
A tropical storm is moving towards the area, and according to national weather forecasts, the storm "Vipa" is expected to hit the northern region of Vietnam, including the coast of Ha Long Bay, next week.
