As Iran's grip on the Strait of Hormuz weakens, calls from senior officials to seek an exit have increased, and the leadership is facing mounting pressures due to the repercussions of the war, coinciding with the tightening of the American economic and financial stranglehold.
Loss of Control over Hormuz
During the recent phase of the war, the number of ships crossing Hormuz quietly has increased, with around 200 vessels sailing last week, according to data from the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center.
This flow represents a 400% increase over the past two weeks, while maritime navigation analysts at "Kpler" indicated that shipping traffic has found a safe passage, aided by the U.S. Navy, meaning that Iran has partially lost control over the strait.
As ship movements and oil exports have increased, Iranian oil exports have dropped to nearly zero, under the weight of the American blockade and new economic sanctions.
Recent satellite images have shown little to no activity at Iran's oil export center on Khark Island, leaving Iran with limited options to compensate for its already struggling economy, which is suffering from historically high inflation and unemployment.
No economic breakthrough is in sight for the regime, as Washington continues to impose sanctions as part of its "maximum pressure" campaign to push the Iranian economy towards collapse, according to the "New York Post."
Disputes Within the Leadership Ranks
At the same time, Tehran is facing a divide within the leadership regarding the course of the war.
Hardliners like the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, and the Revolutionary Guard insist that Tehran can withstand any pressures while continuing to harm the United States.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Bezhakian has confirmed that the increasing economic pressures on Tehran are beginning to drain it, warning against a retreat in a "humiliating" manner.
New American Measures
Before U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Piesen reveals today (Monday) the new American measures to pressure the Iranian economy, the situation in Tehran appears increasingly bleak; President Donald Trump seems to be making clear progress, and all he largely needs is to maintain his hardline stance while his opponent seeks a way out.
Most importantly, oil is now flowing through the Strait of Hormuz, which means that Tehran's bet on closing it has failed, according to the American newspaper.
Inflation in Iran has already surpassed 90%, amid mass unemployment and other crises, making the regime increasingly struggle to pay the salaries of the regular army.
Reuters reported from currency monitoring sites that the Iranian currency has plummeted to an unprecedented level of over two million rials against the dollar, amid American threats of an unprecedented financial blockade and extensive economic sanctions.
