The Egyptian pound has risen against the US dollar in the local market to new levels near 48.5 pounds per dollar, amid limited movements of foreign currency within the banking sector.
The dollar recorded a price of 48.40 pounds for buying and 48.50 pounds for selling in the National Bank of Egypt, Bank of Egypt, Alexandria Bank, Arab African International Bank, and the United Bank.
In contrast, some other banks experienced slight fluctuations in prices, with the buying price in HSBC, Faisal, and Qatar National Bank ranging between 48.39 and 48.43 pounds, while the selling price ranged between 48.49 and 48.53 pounds.
Globally, the dollar received some support after a report indicated weak job opportunities in the United States, and President Donald Trump dismissed a senior official at the Department of Labor; this shocked investors and led them to strengthen expectations for an imminent rate cut by the Federal Reserve (the US central bank).
In this context, the chief analyst at an investment firm said in an interview with "Al Arabiya Business": "The improvement in the price of the Egyptian pound is not only due to the weakness of the dollar, but there are other factors, including the increase in remittances from Egyptians abroad, as well as the improvement in tourism revenues."
The dollar index, which measures the performance of the US currency against a basket of 6 competing currencies, rose by 0.1% to 98.75 points, after having dropped by more than 1%.
The dollar recovered some of its losses against the yen, trading in the latest transactions up by 0.2%, recording 147.67 yen per dollar, but it is still down by about 3 yen from its recent peak. The euro fell by 0.06% to 1.1579 dollars, but the British pound saw little change, recording 1.3281 dollars.
