Sadness and anxiety have settled over the Abu Suleiman area in Alexandria Governorate, after the collapse of a residential building on Saad Zaghloul Street turned into a humanitarian tragedy, leaving two dead and two injured, while the efforts of civil protection teams continue in search of three children believed to still be trapped under the rubble, amid the anticipation of their families and the local residents for any news that reassures them about the fate of the missing.
The rescue forces continue their search and combing operations at the site of the collapsed building, racing against time to reach the missing, while taking precautionary measures to secure nearby buildings and prevent residents and passersby from facing any additional risks.
Two dead and two injured in the building collapse
The death toll from the incident has risen to two fatalities and two injuries, after civil protection forces managed to retrieve the bodies of a man and a woman from under the rubble, while the injured were transferred to the university hospital in Alexandria for the necessary medical care, according to the information received regarding the incident.
Search operations began yesterday evening (Tuesday), after the security authorities in the Alexandria Security Directorate received a report of a building collapse within the jurisdiction of the Second Raml Police Station, prompting police, civil protection forces, and ambulances to rush to the scene.
Searching for 3 children among the rubble
Civil protection teams are intensifying their efforts to reach three missing children, amid difficulties imposed by the nature of the rubble and the necessity of conducting rescue operations with caution to avoid any additional collapses that could endanger the lives of rescue teams or trapped individuals.
The operations included lifting parts of the debris using equipment, removing obstacles that blocked the entrance to the building, and using a chainsaw to open pathways that allow rescue teams to advance inside.
The teams are also using specialized devices to detect what may be trapped under the rubble, along with cameras that assist in examining voids and hard-to-reach areas, in an attempt to pinpoint the locations of the missing and direct search efforts more accurately.
In the same context, civil protection forces are monitoring the condition of the adjacent building and its stability, in anticipation of the possibility of it being affected by the collapse or experiencing a tilt that could pose a danger during rescue operations.
Testimony from a resident: "Suddenly, we found the house collapsing on us"
In a testimony reflecting the shock experienced by the residents of the area, one of the occupants of the collapsed building recounted the first moments of the incident, confirming that he was not inside the house at the time of the collapse, as he was returning from work.
He stated, in exclusive remarks to "Okaz," that he was surprised by the incident around eight o'clock in the evening (Tuesday), without knowing the reason that led to the building's fall, adding: "We don’t know what happened, suddenly we found the house collapsing on us, and I wasn’t there at the time; I was still at work and coming back, and by God's grace, I wasn’t in the house."
He pointed out that the incident resulted in the death of two of his neighbors and the injury of two others, while efforts continue to search for the three children whose fate remains uncertain, amid cooperation between rescue teams and residents in following up on developments and waiting for any new news.
He added that the building housed families living on its various floors, noting that, according to his information, no demolition order had been issued for the building.
Securing the area and cutting off gas and electricity
Upon receiving the report, the concerned authorities dispatched two fire trucks and 12 ambulances to the scene of the incident, and established a security cordon around the building, with barriers set up to prevent citizens from approaching the danger zone and to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles and rescue teams.
Representatives from utility companies also arrived at the site, and gas and electricity were cut off from the building as part of precautionary measures aimed at reducing potential risks during the debris removal operations.
Initial inspections revealed that the building is located on Saad Zaghloul Street, branching off from the Mardoum Canal Street, and consists of a ground floor and four upper floors, while preliminary information indicated that the ground and first upper floors were unoccupied.
Engineering committee to inspect neighboring buildings
In a field move to follow up on the aftermath of the incident, Alexandria Governor Engineer Ayman Attia, along with the security director and Major General Hatem El-Haddad, are overseeing efforts to deal with the collapse and secure the surrounding area.
The Alexandria Governor has directed the formation of a specialized engineering committee to examine the site of the incident and inspect neighboring buildings, assess their structural condition and how they were affected by the collapse, and determine the necessary precautionary measures to protect residents and passersby.
These measures come in conjunction with the ongoing rescue operations and technical inspections, with the results of the inspections and specialized investigations expected to reveal the causes of the collapse and its circumstances, and to determine responsibilities and necessary actions based on what the results yield.
Continuous anticipation awaiting the fate of the missing
Amid the sounds of heavy machinery and ongoing search operations, the families of the missing and local residents are enduring difficult hours, hoping that the rescue efforts will end with the discovery of the three children, while the concerned authorities continue their work to secure the site and prevent the incident's effects from extending to surrounding buildings, as the causes of the building's collapse remain unresolved, awaiting the results of the engineering inspection and specialized investigations.
