In a striking scene following the sinking of a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, users on social media circulated videos and images showing iPhones, luxury perfumes, and other goods floating on the water's surface, while small fishing boats attempted to retrieve some of the scattered contents in the area.
The circulation of these scenes coincided with the sinking of the container ship "GFS Pride," which flies the Singapore flag, after it encountered a maritime accident while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, amid conflicting accounts regarding the cause of the sinking and the escalating risks facing commercial shipping in the region.
While the clips raised questions about the nature of the cargo the ship was carrying, the "Okaz" team conducted an analysis of one of the circulated videos using a specialized tool for analyzing visual clips and detecting signs of manipulation by artificial intelligence.
Are the videos of the floating goods generated by artificial intelligence?
According to the analysis result displayed by the Deepfake Detection tool, the probability of forgery was about 5%, a result indicating low signs of manipulation in the analyzed clip.
The analysis summary indicated that the video quality was average, with a rating of about 5 out of 10, due to some video compression artifacts and limited resolution, but it did not detect significant indicators of manipulation by artificial intelligence or the generation of a fake clip using deepfake techniques.
The analysis added that the presence of seemingly natural environmental elements, such as water reflections and floating debris, along with the plausibility of the ship accident scenario, contributed to the lower estimated forgery degree.
However, this result does not conclusively prove that the video is authentic or that all its details reflect the reported incident; the analysis is limited to the indicators that the tool can detect in the analyzed clip and does not independently confirm the location or timing of the filming or the identity of the goods shown in it.
Details of the sinking of the "GFS Pride" ship
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore announced that the ship was struck by an unspecified projectile on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in damage and a fire on board before it sank.
The authority confirmed the safe evacuation of the 21 crew members, with no injuries reported.
According to maritime and navigation security sources, the ship sank about 4 nautical miles northwest of Ras al-Sheikh Masoud in the Musandam Peninsula of Oman, with warnings of floating containers in the area.
The "GFS Ship Management FZE," based in the UAE, manages the ship, which has a capacity of about 2,824 twenty-foot equivalent units, a common measure for determining the capacity of container ships.
Conflicting accounts regarding the cause of the sinking
Accounts regarding the circumstances of the incident varied; maritime sources reported that the ship was struck by an unknown projectile, while the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced that a container ship carrying more than 2,500 containers sank after colliding with a naval mine and catching fire.
The Revolutionary Guard claimed that the ship attempted to cross a route it described as "unauthorized and dangerous," warning ships and fishermen to stay away from the floating containers in the area.
According to available information, the nature of the object that caused the sinking of the ship has not been definitively determined, and no detailed shipping statement has been published confirming the type of goods it was carrying.
Thus, the appearance of boxes resembling iPhone packages and perfume bottles in the circulated clips is not sufficient on its own to prove that these products were part of the ship's official cargo, unless independent evidence confirms that.
Escalating risks to navigation in the Strait of Hormuz
The incident comes amid a rise in attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz and the surrounding waters, coinciding with tensions related to the U.S.-Iranian war.
Maritime reports have mentioned other incidents affecting ships in the region, while Singapore expressed its concern over the continued attacks on commercial vessels, describing them as unjustified and a violation of international law.
