In a time of great sensitivity and complexity, the foreign ministers of the Quad group (Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and Pakistan) held an important meeting in Istanbul the day before yesterday, Friday. A statement was issued from the meeting that calls for discussion of some of the paragraphs it contains, which express the group's countries' views on the escalating situation in the region, which is poised for explosion if not addressed before reaching a critical moment.
One of the paragraphs of the statement says, "Regarding the military conflict between the United States/Israel and Iran, as well as the Strait of Hormuz, the ministers emphasized the urgent need to address this conflict exclusively through dialogue and diplomacy, and to prevent the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, including ships, expressing their support for the memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad, and welcoming the ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation, reaffirming their commitment to a sustainable negotiated solution."
This paragraph confirms the group's countries' awareness of the looming danger and indicates that the military confrontation between the two parties has not achieved any result other than generating new crises from the core crisis that sparked the confrontation, namely the Iranian nuclear weapon. The confrontation has not been practically resolved in favor of either party; Iran has neither complied nor surrendered despite the consequences it has faced, nor has the American/Israeli side been able to force it to do so. However, the recent dangerous development is President Trump and some of his administration officials hinting that America will resume military action but using unconventional weapons that have not been used before. Additionally, the Israeli partner has begun a provocative practical escalation by having its warplanes fly near Iranian airspace, along with Benjamin Netanyahu's statements that Israel may attack Iran even if the American ally does not participate or agree.
The Quad group countries are well aware of the consequences of a new military confrontation should it occur, in the manner threatened by Trump and Netanyahu. The entire region will burn, and from experience, Iran will target the Gulf states, and its targeting may be reckless if it suffers significant damage. But is there hope for "resolving the conflict exclusively through dialogue and diplomacy," as the Quad group aspires? The memorandum of understanding sponsored by the Pakistani mediator has not yielded a positive result, as the Iranian side is practicing evasion and maneuvering to buy time in hopes of easing pressure if the outcome of the American midterm elections is not in favor of Trump, who in turn hints at an attack at any moment and may do so, especially as he repeats his statements that he does not trust that Iran genuinely wishes to engage seriously in a political understanding that leads to the desired outcome.
We are, therefore, faced with a major dilemma, represented by the diminishing opportunity for diplomatic efforts. With the new escalation and the rising level of American/Israeli threats against the Iranian side's indifference to what will happen to it, the coming days will be among the most critical and dangerous phases the region will go through, unless there is a swift and effective move from all influential countries in the international community to save the world from a major catastrophe.
