A massive fire broke out in a historic building known as the "Eagle's Nest" (Eagle's Nest) in the mountainous region of Berchtesgaden in Bavaria, southern Germany, last night (Friday), prompting the intervention of about 200 firefighters and emergency personnel, while the police announced the arrest of a person on suspicion of involvement in the incident.
The German police clarified that the fire started in the "Kehlsteinhaus" building, located at an altitude of 1,834 meters above sea level near the Austrian border, noting that emergency teams saw flames rising from the building upon their arrival at the site.
Difficulties in Extinguishing the Fire
The authorities reported that alarm systems detected the fire on Friday evening, before firefighting teams headed to the site, where they faced significant challenges in accessing the building due to its high mountainous location and the nature of the surrounding terrain.
They added that the density of smoke and heat inside the building forced firefighters to use breathing apparatus, especially during the firefighting operations, which lasted for hours with the participation of dozens of vehicles and about 200 firefighters and emergency personnel.
Arrest of a Suspect and Opening a Criminal Investigation
The police announced the arrest of a person near the fire site, explaining that investigators are working to determine whether he is connected to the outbreak of the flames.
They confirmed that the causes of the fire remain unknown and that criminal investigations are ongoing to uncover the circumstances, without announcing any potential motives or formally charging the arrested individual.
No initial reports of human injuries have been received, while available information indicated that the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
A Historic Building from the Nazi Era
The "Kehlsteinhaus" is considered one of the most prominent historical buildings associated with the Nazi era in Germany, as it was built in 1938 to serve as a reception site for high-ranking officials of the Nazi regime and their guests, and it was one of the locations linked to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
The building is located in the Bavarian Alps, near Hitler's former residence known as "Berghof," which was a separate building.
After World War II, the "Kehlsteinhaus" was classified as a historical landmark and became a tourist destination featuring a mountain restaurant, welcoming visitors from around the world.
The German authorities have not yet announced a final estimate of the damage inflicted on the building as a result of the fire.
