A Brazilian man's journey, who sold everything he owned in hopes of marrying the woman he loved online, turned into a harsh shock when he discovered that the (girlfriend) he traveled to meet was not a real person, but a character generated by artificial intelligence techniques.
The story began with construction worker Edimar Martins (49 years old), who in 2020 came across an account named Jessica Oliveira on social media, and remained convinced for years that he was in a relationship with a real woman who could become his life partner.
As his attachment to her grew, he decided in early October to take a decisive step, selling his possessions to cover travel expenses from the city of Imperatriz (northeast Brazil) to the city of Belo Horizonte (southeast of the country), traveling over 1900 kilometers in hopes of starting a new life alongside the woman he loved.
But his dreams quickly collapsed upon reaching his destination, as he began searching for her in vain, before discovering that the name he had been following did not belong to a real person. When he tried to inquire about her whereabouts, he was informed that the entire story was based on misleading information and that the woman he came to meet did not exist in reality.
With his funds running out, Martins turned to social services in the city, where he explained that he traveled in search of a life partner after being burdened by loneliness, ultimately receiving assistance that enabled him to return to his homeland.
It later became clear that the character known as (Jessica Oliveira) or (Jessica Vazendeira) had appeared in video clips on the (TikTok) platform and had a wide following, while some of her posts included promises of a luxurious life and marriage to a man who would move in with her on a farm where she would take care of all his needs.
For its part, the entity overseeing the account acknowledged that the character was virtual and produced by artificial intelligence, confirming that the purpose of its creation was to generate content that attracts interaction on the platform, and denied any personal communication with the man or inviting him to travel.
Despite the disappointment he faced, Martins affirmed that he had not lost hope of finding a real life partner, noting that he still believes in the possibility of starting a new love story away from digital illusions.
