The Egyptian Ministry of Interior revealed details about the incident of an elderly man falling from a passenger bus in Dakahlia Governorate, after a video clip of the incident sparked widespread outrage on social media in recent hours.
The ministry stated in an official statement that it "managed to identify the person shown in the video, who is a 72-year-old farmer from Dakahlia Governorate," noting that while he was heading to his residence, he attempted to board the bus, but the driver's assistant prevented him from getting on, which led to his fall to the ground.
The statement added that "upon investigation, it was found that no official reports had been filed regarding the incident, and the bus belonging to a private passenger transport association, along with its driver and assistant, was identified and apprehended," confirming that "when confronted, they admitted to committing the act as shown in the video clip."
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that the bus has been seized, and necessary legal actions have been taken against the driver and his assistant, in preparation for presenting them to the public prosecutor who is conducting the investigation.
The video clip had shown the moment the elderly man fell while trying to board the bus, which elicited widespread sympathy among social media users, along with calls to hold those responsible for the incident accountable, which was described as "a painful scene reflecting the need for more discipline and oversight in public transportation."
Security agencies are continuing to investigate the incident, while the elderly man's son stated in media interviews that his father "is fine health-wise but is psychologically affected by what happened," stressing that he will not waive his father's rights.
