شهدت منطقة فورست هيل جنوبي العاصمة البريطانية لندن، مساء أمس (الخميس) حالة من الاستنفار بعدما اندلع حريق هائل في متجر يقع في الطابق الأرضي من مبنى سكني، مما أجبر السلطات على إخلاء عشرات السكان وتعليق خدمات النقل في المنطقة.
وأعلنت فرقة إطفاء لندن أن أكثر من 100 رجل إطفاء و15 آلية تدخلوا للسيطرة على النيران التي التهمت المتجر وامتدت إلى الشقق السكنية العلوية، وسط تصاعد أعمدة دخان كثيفة وألسنة لهب شاهقة شوهدت من مسافات بعيدة.
وأكدت السلطات إجلاء 15 شخصاً من المباني المجاورة دون تسجيل أي إصابات، فيما نصحت السكان بإبقاء النوافذ مغلقة تجنباً لاستنشاق الدخان المتصاعد.
كما فرضت السلطات طوقاً أمنياً بقطر 25 متراً، وأعلنت أن خدمات القطارات توقفت في محطة فورست هيل، في حين شهدت الطرق المحيطة، بما في ذلك طريق A205 الدائري الجنوبي، ازدحامات خانقة.
ولم يُعرف حتى الآن سبب الحريق، في حين أكدت فرقة الإطفاء أن عملية الإخماد ستستمر طوال الليل باستخدام معدات خاصة، من بينها سلم مائي بارتفاع 32 متراً لإطفاء النيران من الأعلى.
The Forest Hill area south of the British capital London witnessed a state of alert last night (Thursday) after a massive fire broke out in a store located on the ground floor of a residential building, forcing authorities to evacuate dozens of residents and suspend transport services in the area.
The London Fire Brigade announced that more than 100 firefighters and 15 vehicles were deployed to control the flames that engulfed the store and spread to the upper residential apartments, amid rising columns of thick smoke and towering flames visible from far away.
Authorities confirmed the evacuation of 15 people from nearby buildings without any reported injuries, while advising residents to keep their windows closed to avoid inhaling the rising smoke.
A security cordon with a radius of 25 meters was also imposed, and it was announced that train services were halted at Forest Hill station, while surrounding roads, including the A205 South Circular Road, experienced severe congestion.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, while the fire brigade confirmed that the extinguishing operation would continue throughout the night using special equipment, including a 32-meter water ladder to fight the flames from above.
