A recent study conducted by the independent environmental group "Global Witness" revealed a serious security flaw in the TikTok platform, as fake accounts for 13-year-old children were directed to explicit pornographic content, despite the activation of protective features like restricted mode. The Guardian reported that researchers used new phones and computers to ensure the accuracy of the experiment and the validity of the results, finding that the app's search algorithm suggests search terms that lead to inappropriate content.

Pornographic Search Suggestions

The study's results showed that the "Things You Might Also Like" feature within the app displays videos with explicit sexual implications and contains clear sexual expressions in the description, making it easy to access this type of content. After just a few clicks, the researchers were able to view full pornographic clips, even though TikTok's policy strictly prohibits such content.

Visual Deception for Algorithms

The study revealed that these pornographic clips cleverly disguise themselves, as one part of the screen shows innocent content while the other part displays explicit sexual content. This method allows for bypassing the censorship mechanisms that are supposed to prevent children from accessing this type of content.

TikTok's Response

After the study's results were published, TikTok announced the removal of the clips highlighted in the study and confirmed that it had modified its search algorithms to eliminate harmful suggestions, promising to work on improving protective mechanisms to ensure user safety, especially for younger age groups.
