A young Turkish firefighter committed suicide in his prison, about four months after the death of his wife and two children in a fire he was accused of negligence and causing.

Turkish media reported on Monday that Turgay Gizkin committed suicide in his prison in the city of Adana in the south of the country.

Prison guards found the firefighter dead by suicide, but the method of suicide has not been disclosed.

The Turkish police arrested the young Gizkin last May after investigators suspected that he had either orchestrated the fire that claimed his family's lives or failed to prevent it due to a dispute with his wife.

Prolonged investigations into the incident, which occurred during Ramadan last year (March 18), led to increasing suspicions about the firefighter, who ignored his wife's warnings several times about the smell of gas leaking in their home.

Gizkin was at work in a firefighting unit in the city of Aydın in western Turkey on the morning of the incident when neighbors called him, and he returned to find his apartment on fire with smoke rising from it.

The fire resulted in the death of his wife Fatima and their two children (4 and 11 years old), raising suspicions about the husband, a firefighter, who ignored—despite his experience—warning messages from his wife via WhatsApp about a gas leak in the house.

What further fueled suspicions about the husband was his long-standing dispute with his wife Fatima and the intervention of their families several times to resolve the conflict, coinciding with the husband being involved with another woman with the intention of marrying her after divorcing his wife.

Gizkin faced accusations in the case of having sedated his wife and children that night while the mother was preparing the pre-dawn meal for Ramadan, which caused them to sleep deeply without noticing the fire, while the husband left for work without concern.
