The current phase of the initiative to withdraw expired medications in Egypt has achieved success, with 54% of pharmacies registered on the dedicated electronic link for the initiative, recording approximately 17.4 million expired medication units by July 15, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Egyptian Drug Authority today (Tuesday), the New Valley Governorate topped the provinces with a registration rate of 96.9% of pharmacies, followed by Suez at 90.4%, then Sohag (88.6%), Damietta (84.4%), and Minya (75%). Meanwhile, provinces like Cairo (45.8%), Giza (40.2%), and South Sinai (29.8%) recorded the lowest registration rates.

The registration phase will continue until July 30, 2025, followed by the actual withdrawal phase of expired medications, which will end on October 30, 2025, during which distributors will withdraw the registered units from pharmacies.

The initiative is overseen by a central committee that includes representatives from the Pharmacists Syndicate, the Pharmaceutical Industry Chamber, and the Chamber of Commerce, in addition to subcommittees in the provinces to ensure effective coordination.
