في حادثة أثارت الذعر وأدت إلى استنفار أمني واسع، تسبب بحار في البحرية الملكية البريطانية بحالة طوارئ شاملة على متن الغواصة النووية «إتش إم إس فانجارد» بعد إبلاغه غرفة التحكم الرئيسية بوجود قنبلة على متن السفينة التي يبلغ وزنها 16 ألف طن.
ووفقاً لمصادر مطلعة لصحيفة «التليغراف» قام البحار بالاتصال بغرفة التحكم الرئيسية في الغواصة مدعياً وجود قنبلة على متن السفينة، ونظراً إلى طبيعة الغواصة النووية المسلحة بصواريخ ترايدنت الباليستية، التي تشكل العمود الفقري للردع النووي البريطاني، اعتُبر التهديد جدياً للغاية.
وأدى البلاغ إلى إطلاق إجراءات طوارئ فورية، حيث أُغلقت القاعدة البحرية في فاسلان، وتم نشر مشاة البحرية الملكية لحراسة الرصيف ومداخل الغواصة لمنع أي تحركات غير مصرح بها، كما تم استدعاء فرقة متخصصة في المتفجرات لتفتيش السفينة، وبعد تحقيقات مكثفة تبين أن التهديد كان خدعة، ما أثار استياءً كبيراً بين أفراد الطاقم والقيادة البحرية.
وتعد الغواصة البريطانية «إتش إم إس فانجارد»، التي تبلغ تكلفتها 4 مليارات جنيه إسترليني، الغواصة الرئيسية ضمن فئة فانجارد التي تضم 4 غواصات نووية، وهي جزء من برنامج الردع النووي البريطاني (ترايدنت)، تمت تهيئتها لتحمل ما يصل إلى 16 صاروخاً باليستياً من طراز ترايدنت «II D5»، ما يجعلها حجر الزاوية في استراتيجية الدفاع النووي للمملكة المتحدة.
وتقع قاعدة فاسلان على بعد 40 كيلومتراً غرب غلاسكو، وهي المقر الرئيسي لغواصات فانجارد التي تحافظ على الردع النووي المستمر في البحر، وتُعد هذه القاعدة واحدة من أكثر المنشآت حساسية أمنياً في المملكة المتحدة.
من جانبها علقت البحرية الملكية على الواقعة، قائلة إن أحد أفرادها قيد التحقيق من قبل قيادة الجرائم الخطيرة في الدفاع، بتهمة إثارة ذعر كاذب، موضحة أن الإجراءات الأمنية الصارمة التي تم تطبيقها أثبتت فعاليتها في التعامل مع الحادثة، ولم تتعرض سلامة الغواصة أو طاقمها للخطر.
