في ظهوره الأول في مونديال كأس العالم للأندية بعد غيابه بسبب تعرضه لالتهاب معوي حاد حرمه من المشاركة مع فريقه ريال مدريد في دور المجموعات ودور الـ16، استطاع الفرنسي كيليان مبابي قيادة فريقه المدريدي لنصف نهائي مونديال الأندية، بعد أن أحرز هدفاً عالمياً في الوقت بدل الضائع في لقاء فريقه أمام بوروسيا دورتموند.
وشهد اللقاء في الدقيقة 67 مشاركة النجم الفرنسي مبابي بديلاً عن الإنجليزي ترنت آرنولد وكان فريقه متقدماً بهدفين نظيفين، ولكن في الوقت بدل الضائع قلص بوروسيا دورتموند النتيجة لتصبح 2/ 1، وبعد هذا الهدف بدقيقتين فقط وضع مبابي بصمته التهديفية بهدف ولا أحلى عندما تلقى كرة عرضية من أردا غولر لعبها مبابي «مقصية على الطائر» في الشباك الألمانية هدفاً ثالثاً لفريقه ريال مدريد ليتأهل لنصف النهائي ويضرب موعداً مع فريقه السابق باريس سان جيرمان.
وشهدت تعابير مبابي بعد الهدف ردود فعل كبيرة ونالت إعجاب عشاق المستديرة إذ أشار بيديه مشكلاً رقم (20) وهو رقم لاعب ليفربول الراحل ديوغو جوتا، ومن ثم رفع كلتا يديه للسماء رافضاً الاحتفال بالهدف.
