The Al Ahly Club has made initial contacts with Australian coach Ange Postecoglou, the former head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, as one of the names considered for the technical role, in case a decision is made to change the current coaching staff led by Matthias Jaissle.
According to journalist David Ornstein via "The Athletic," the name of Spanish coach Xavi Hernandez, the former head coach of Barcelona, is also on the list of alternative names being studied by the club, in the event of the departure of the current German coach Matthias Jaissle.
Jaissle's contract with Al Ahly extends until 2026, but he has rejected several offers to renew the contract, which has prompted the club's management to open communication channels with alternative coaches, as negotiations with Postecoglou are progressing rapidly.
Nevertheless, the decision to part ways with Jaissle remains complicated; the young coach succeeded in leading Al Ahly to win the AFC Champions League title last May, alongside the widespread popularity he enjoys among the club's fans, following two successful seasons since his arrival from Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.
According to the report, Postecoglou had a successful stint with Tottenham, leading the team to win the UEFA Europa League title last May against Manchester United, marking the team's first trophy in 17 years. However, the decline in the "Spurs'" results in the Premier League, finishing the season in seventeenth place with 22 defeats, hastened his dismissal decision in June, with Danish coach Thomas Frank succeeding him.
Postecoglou is known for his extensive experience, having coached in Australia, Greece, Japan, Scotland, and England, but he has never worked in the Gulf region or the Saudi Professional League.
On the other hand, Xavi remains out of work since his dismissal from coaching Barcelona in May 2024, following a series of administrative fluctuations; he had announced last January his intention to leave the club at the end of the season, before reversing his decision in April, but the club's management decided to dismiss him just 30 days after he announced his continuation until 2025. Xavi had led Barcelona to win the La Liga title in his first season, before the team fell behind Real Madrid by 10 points in the following season.
