The head coach of the Saudi national football team, Hervé Renard, confirmed that the match against Trinidad and Tobago, which will take place early Monday in the third round of the group stage of the Gold Cup, is of great importance, as both teams are striving for victory to secure a qualification spot.
Renard explained during the press conference that the national team has prepared well for this encounter, noting that his coaching staff visited Las Vegas months ago to assess the available stadiums, and the current match venue was chosen to host the training session as well due to the quality of its facilities.
He added: "We previously played against Trinidad and Tobago before the Gulf Cup, and we know their style of play well. Football has become transparent in terms of information and data, and readiness is the decisive factor."
He continued: "In the last match, we were focused 95%, but the small differences are what determine the results, and this is what we are working to avoid."
Renard emphasized that the team came to the tournament with the goal of advancing from the group stage, adding: "Against America, it may have seemed that we started by defending, but football is built on strategies, and tomorrow our goal is clear: to win."
Regarding the state of Saudi football, he pointed out that the local league has seen significant developments through the increase in the number of foreign professionals and the presence of high-quality players, which has contributed to raising the level of competition. However, he warned that the density of foreign players may affect the opportunities for local players to participate, posing a challenge for the national team.
Renard appreciated the efforts made by the Saudi Football Federation in supporting Saudi players and creating the appropriate environment for their development, saying: "Some players have left for the first time to pursue experiences abroad since September, which is difficult in terms of changing environment and culture, but it is important for the future of Saudi football."
He noted that the team is going through a transitional phase after the departure of several key players following the 2022 Qatar World Cup, such as Mohammed Al-Owais, Yasser Al-Shahrani, Salman Al-Faraj, Mohammed Al-Breik, and Ali Al-Bulayhi, indicating that the current group includes young elements that need patience and support.
In conclusion, he said: "It is not possible to achieve great results immediately; we are working on developing Saudi players from all aspects, and we believe that the future will be bright."
For his part, national team player Hammam Al-Hamami expressed the importance of the match, saying: "We are facing a decisive game; winning it means qualification, and we ask God for success in achieving the aspirations of the Saudi fans."
