شهدت المجموعة الثالثة أحداثا مثيرة إذ عاد جنوب أفريقيا إلى المونديال في مشهد درامي، فقد تراجعت بنين من صدارة المجموعة إلى المركز الثالث لتفقد فرصتها في الوصول للمونديال أو حتى المنافسة على الملحق، بينما صعدت نيجيريا إلى المركز الثاني.
على ملعب مبومبيلا، تفوق منتخب جنوب أفريقيا على ضيفه رواندا بثلاثة أهداف دون مقابل، أحرز أهداف جنوب أفريقيا ثالينتي مباتا (د:5)، أوسوين أبوليس (د:26)، إيفيدنيس ماكغوبا (د:72)، ليحجز المنتخب الجنوب أفريقي مقعده في نهائيات كأس العالم 2026 مستفيدا من فوز نيجيريا على بنين ليضمن تأهله المباشر إلى المونديال للمرة الأولى منذ نسخة 2010 التي استضافها على أرضه.
وافتتح ثالينتي مباتا التسجيل مبكرا بتسديدة قوية سكنت شباك الحارس فياكري نتواري، قبل أن يضيف أوسوين أبوليس الهدف الثاني بعد تمريرة متقنة من إفيدنس ماكغوبا.
وفي الشوط الثاني، تبادل الثنائي الأدوار حين نفّذ أبوليس ركلة ركنية مثالية حولها ماكغوبا برأسه إلى الشباك، مؤكدا تفوق بلاده في ليلة احتفالية كبيرة بجنوب أفريقيا.
وفي اللقاء الآخر، سحق منتخب نيجيريا ضيفه بنين برباعية نظيفة تألق فيها فيكتور أوسيمين بثلاثية («هاتريك» د:3، 37، 51)، فيما أحرز زميله فرانك أونيكا الهدف الرابع (د:90+1)، وانطلقت المباراة بطريقة مثيرة، حيث تقدم بنين في الصدارة قبل اللقاء، لكنهم تلقوا ضربة قوية بعد ثلاث دقائق فقط نتيجة تمريرة خاطئة في خط الوسط استغلها صامويل تشوكويزي لتمرير كرة مثالية إلى أوسيمين، الذي لم يُخطئ في تسديدها، وواصل تشوكويزي التألق وصنع الهدف الثاني قرب نهاية الشوط الأول بعرضية متقنة، حولها أوسيمين برأسه إلى الشباك، قبل أن يُكمل المهاجم المتألق ثلاثيته في الشوط الثاني بعد تحويله كرة حرة نفذها موسى سيمون برأسه ببراعة، ثم أضاف فرانك أونيكا الهدف الرابع.
وبهاتين النتيجتين، يتأهل منتخب جنوب أفريقيا لنهائيات كأس العالم، فيما جاء منتخب نيجيريا ثانيا برصد 17 نقطة وينتظر بقية النتائج لتحديد تأهله من عدمه للملحق الأفريقي.

At Mbombela Stadium, the South African team outperformed their guest Rwanda with three goals to none, with goals scored by Thalenti Mbatha (5'), Oswin Apollis (26'), and Evidence Makgoba (72'), securing the South African team a spot in the 2026 World Cup finals, benefiting from Nigeria's victory over Benin to ensure their direct qualification for the World Cup for the first time since the 2010 edition hosted on their home soil.
Thalenti Mbatha opened the scoring early with a powerful shot that found the net of goalkeeper Viakri Ntowari, before Oswin Apollis added the second goal following a precise pass from Evidence Makgoba.
In the second half, the duo exchanged roles as Apollis executed a perfect corner kick that Makgoba headed into the net, confirming his country's superiority on a grand celebratory night in South Africa.
In the other match, the Nigerian team crushed their guest Benin with a clean four-goal victory, where Victor Osimhen shone with a hat-trick (3', 37', 51'), while his teammate Frank Onyeka scored the fourth goal (90+1'). The match started excitingly, as Benin was leading the standings before the match, but they received a heavy blow just three minutes in due to a misplaced pass in midfield, which Samuel Chukwueze exploited to deliver a perfect ball to Osimhen, who did not miss his shot. Chukwueze continued to shine, assisting the second goal near the end of the first half with a precise cross, which Osimhen headed into the net, before the outstanding striker completed his hat-trick in the second half by converting a free kick taken by Musa Simon with a brilliant header, and then Frank Onyeka added the fourth goal.
