أعلن اتحاد كرة القدم الأذربيجاني مساء اليوم الإثنين، إقالة المدرب البرتغالي فرناندو سانتوس من منصبه كمدير فني للمنتخب الكروي الأول، بعد فترة قصيرة امتدت 15 شهرًا دون تحقيق أي فوز.
وجاء قرار الإقالة عقب الهزيمة القاسية التي مني بها منتخب أذربيجان أمام منتخب آيسلندا بخماسية دون مقابل ضمن منافسات تصفيات كأس العالم 2026.
وأكد الأمين العام لاتحاد كرة القدم في أذربيجان، أن العقد تم فسخه بالتراضي بين الطرفين، مشيرًا إلى أن سانتوس لم يشارك في المؤتمر الصحفي قبل مواجهة أوكرانيا، والتي سيقودها مؤقتًا مدرب فريق تحت 21 عامًا.
وخلال فترة قيادة سانتوس التي بدأت في يونيو 2024، خاض المنتخب الأذربيجاني 11 مباراة، خسر 9 منها وتعادل في مباراتين فقط، ولم يتمكن من الانتصار طوال الفترة القصيرة الماضية.

The Azerbaijan Football Federation announced this evening, Monday, the dismissal of Portuguese coach Fernando Santos from his position as head coach of the national football team, after a short period of 15 months without achieving any victories.
The decision to dismiss him came after the harsh defeat the Azerbaijan national team suffered against Iceland, losing five goals to none in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The Secretary General of the Football Federation of Azerbaijan confirmed that the contract was terminated by mutual agreement between the two parties, noting that Santos did not participate in the press conference before the match against Ukraine, which will be temporarily led by the under-21 team coach.
During Santos's tenure, which began in June 2024, the Azerbaijan national team played 11 matches, losing 9 of them and drawing only 2, without managing to secure a victory throughout the short period.
