وانتفض مانشستر يونايتد في آخر ربع ساعة من الوقت الأصلي، وقلّص الوافد الجديد برايان مبيومو النتيجة لصالح «الشياطين الحمر» في الدقيقة 75، قبل أن يدرك هاري ماغواير التعادل قبل دقيقة واحدة فقط من نهاية الوقت الأصلي.
شهدت ركلات الحظ الترجيحية تسديد 25 ركلة، قبل أن تبتسم في النهاية لصالح غريمسبي.
واقتحم مشجعو غريمسبي أرض الملعب للاحتفال مع اللاعبين بعد أن ارتدت ركلة الجزاء التي نفذها مبيومو من العارضة.
Manchester United experienced a nightmarish evening as they bid farewell to the EFL Cup (Carabao) in the second round, at the hands of their host Grimsby, who plays in the fourth division.
Grimsby won the thrilling penalty shootout 12-11 at Blundell Park, which has a capacity of nine thousand spectators, after the regular time ended in a 2-2 draw.
Charles Vernam opened the scoring for Grimsby in the 22nd minute, and then Tyrell Warren doubled the home side's lead with a second goal.
Manchester United rallied in the last fifteen minutes of regular time, with new signing Bryan Mbeumo reducing the deficit for the "Red Devils" in the 75th minute, before Harry Maguire equalized just one minute before the end of regular time.
The penalty shootout saw 25 kicks taken, before it ultimately smiled in favor of Grimsby.
Grimsby fans stormed the pitch to celebrate with the players after Mbeumo's penalty kick hit the crossbar.
