وشهدت المواجهة تألق قائد البرتغال كريستيانو رونالدو، نجم نادي النصر السعودي، الذي أدرك التعادل لفريقه بهدفٍ ثمين، بعد أن كان المنتخب البرتغالي متأخرًا (1-2).
وامتدت المباراة إلى ركلات الترجيح، حيث حسم روبن نيفيز، نجم نادي الهلال، الركلة الخامسة، مانحًا البرتغال لقبًا قاريًا كبيرًا، في واحدة من أكثر البطولات الأوروبية المنتظَرة.
