Thousands of Israelis demonstrated in Tel Aviv today (Saturday) in protest against the government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, just three days before the Knesset elections scheduled for next Tuesday, amid a closely contested electoral race and calls for accountability for the security failures that preceded the October 7, 2023 attack.
The demonstration was called by the "October Council," which was established by the families of the hostages to demand clarity on the circumstances surrounding the failures that prevented the thwarting of the Hamas attack, and to form an official and independent inquiry committee to determine responsibilities.
The council stated, via the "X" platform, that the demonstration represents the concluding event of its three-year campaign, reaffirming its commitment to the demands for truth and accountability.
Prominent figures from opposition parties are expected to participate in the protest, while the "October Council" warned law enforcement agencies of potential attempts to obstruct the demonstration, stating that it had sent an urgent letter to the police commissioner after receiving warnings about movements from entities linked to the ruling coalition aimed at targeting the gathering.
The demonstration comes amid increasing demands for the establishment of an independent inquiry into the security failures that preceded the October 7, 2023 attack, while Netanyahu's government rejects this option, proposing instead a committee where the ruling coalition appoints half of its members, with the opposition selecting the other half.
This comes at a time when opinion polls show a close competition between Netanyahu's right-wing bloc, which has been in power since late 2022, and the opposing camp led by Gadi Eisenkot, who belongs to the center-right stream.
According to Agence France-Presse, estimates do not indicate that either camp can secure a majority of Knesset seats, which signals complex negotiations to form the next ruling coalition.
The elections hold particular importance in determining the shape of the next government, amid disagreements over responsibility for the security failures, and indications of the difficulty for either camp to obtain a majority that would allow it to form the government alone.
