Clashes erupted between Belgian police and protesters in the capital, Brussels, today (Saturday), during demonstrations demanding increased funding for education and improvements in its conditions. Security forces used tear gas and pepper spray, while police detained 9 individuals in connection with the disturbances.
Hundreds of protesters, mostly young people, gathered to call for better educational conditions, continuing a wave of demonstrations that Belgium has witnessed over the past few months.
Reuters reported that witnesses saw protesters running through the streets of Brussels while being chased by police, and they also observed security personnel beating and kicking one of the demonstrators. Protesters accused the police of using excessive force in their dealings with them.
Some protesters attempted to set fire to bicycles and motorcycles designated for rental, after throwing them with signs that had been ripped from the streets and other objects. Belgian media reported that police used tear gas to disperse a group of protesters in a separate incident.
For its part, the Brussels police stated in a statement on Saturday evening that no serious incidents were recorded during the protests, confirming that measures were taken to maintain public order and ensure everyone's safety.
They added that they temporarily detained 9 individuals, including 5 for public disorder, and 4 others on charges of possessing prohibited weapons and inciting riots.
