The Mothers of Abductees Association revealed that the Houthi militia has kidnapped more than 171 civilians in several districts of Taiz, according to preliminary statistics, coinciding with a military escalation and siege imposed on the provincial capital for three weeks.
The association condemned, in a statement on Saturday, the kidnapping campaigns targeting civilians in the rural areas of Taiz, following military attacks that affected several villages in recent weeks, affirming that these actions represent a serious escalation that threatens the safe population and turns their villages and homes into areas of fear, pursuit, and revenge.
It reported that the kidnappings targeted civilians due to anti-Houthi posts, their political stances, or their refusal to participate in fighting, in addition to some residents' refusal to receive religious instructions imposed by the militia by force, after seizing mosques in several villages.
The association confirmed that the actual number of abductees may be higher than the announced toll, amid ongoing battles and difficulties in accessing information and verifying cases, expressing its concern over reports of data collection on residents in preparation for their abduction.
It warned that these practices have contributed to a wave of displacement among the residents, who were forced to leave their villages and homes out of fear of arrest and kidnapping, in the absence of real guarantees for their protection.
The association held the Houthi militia fully responsible for the safety of the abductees, asserting that targeting civilians and their arbitrary abduction may constitute a serious violation of international law, and may rise, depending on the circumstances and context, to war crimes that require investigation and accountability.
It called for an immediate halt to the kidnapping campaigns, the unconditional release of all detainees, disclosure of their fate and places of detention, and ensuring their safety and preventing them from torture or inhumane treatment.
It urged the international community to take urgent action that goes beyond statements of condemnation, to pressure the Houthis to stop the violations, protect civilians in rural Taiz, hold accountable those responsible for these practices, and ensure they do not escape punishment.
