North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived in China on Saturday via a newly opened border bridge between the two countries, in a move that reflects the growing closeness between Beijing and Pyongyang, amid anticipation of a possible new summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping at a sensitive regional and international timing.
Reuters reported that a South Korean government official stated Kim entered Chinese territory via the new Yalu River bridge, which connects North Korea to the Chinese border city of Dandong.
The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that Chinese Premier Li Qiang met Kim in Dandong, while the Chinese Foreign Ministry has not commented on the visit, and details of its schedule or duration remain unclear.
Kim's arrival comes a day before the anniversary of China's entry into the Korean War, which lasted from 1950 to 1953, adding a historical dimension to the timing of the visit, as both countries seek to strengthen their political and economic ties.
A New Bridge Strengthening Ties Between Beijing and Pyongyang
The new bridge, which is approximately 3 kilometers long, represents one of the most important land crossings between China and North Korea, and was officially opened in mid-October after a long delay of several years.
The project aims to revitalize trade between the two countries, which has been affected by strained relations during previous periods, as well as disruptions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lu Zhao, an expert on China-North Korea relations at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences, a Chinese government research institution, stated that Kim's visit aligns with a phase of economic rapprochement and increasing high-level communications between the two countries.
He added that the opening of the bridge has removed a major obstacle to the logistics of bilateral trade, suggesting that easing transportation restrictions is likely to increase the volume of trade in the future.
The crossing is expected to facilitate the transport of heavy equipment, raw materials, and energy products that North Korea needs to support its development plans, as well as alleviate pressure on existing crossings.
The bridge's opening comes at a time when steps towards rapprochement between the two countries are accelerating, following two summits between their leaders in the past 13 months.
Will China Host a New Summit Between Kim and Xi?
Attention is focused on the possibility of a meeting between Kim Jong Un and Chinese President Xi Jinping, especially since the visit comes after a series of moves reflecting both parties' desire to strengthen relations.
The last known appearance of Kim in China was in September 2025, when he participated in the 80th anniversary celebrations of Victory Day in Beijing and held a summit meeting with Xi.
Last June, the Chinese president visited North Korea on an official visit, further indicating the activation of relations between the two countries.
China as a Key Ally... and Russia Expanding Its Influence in Pyongyang
China remains the main economic and diplomatic supporter of North Korea, as well as its most important partner in official trade, with historical ties dating back to their participation in the Korean War.
However, relations between Pyongyang and Moscow have seen increasing closeness since the onset of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2022, a development that analysts believe has contributed to reducing North Korea's reliance on China.
In light of this equation, Pyongyang seeks to expand its foreign relations and benefit from cooperation with both powers, enhancing its economic and strategic options.
The opening of the new bridge gains additional significance in this context, as it enhances Beijing's ability to support trade with its neighbor while providing North Korea with an additional route to secure its needs for goods and essential materials.
However, enhancing infrastructure does not necessarily mean an immediate boom in trade, given the ongoing international sanctions imposed on North Korea and the challenges facing trade exchanges.
Trump Awaits an Opportunity to Resume Dialogue with Kim
Kim's visit to China also comes amid declining expectations for a meeting between him and U.S. President Donald Trump before the end of this year.
Trump had expressed a desire to resume talks with the North Korean leader, but U.S. and South Korean officials believe that the chances of a meeting between them this year are diminishing, according to Reuters (Friday).
The Chinese city of Shenzhen is set to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit next month, in which Trump will participate.
