The Jordanian Prime Minister, Jaafar Hassan, pledged to hold accountable those responsible for the attack that targeted a church in the village of Hamoud in the Karak Governorate in the south of the country, affirming that they "will not escape punishment."
Hassan stated, during a security meeting he chaired in Karak Governorate this evening, that "the criminal, sinful hands that took the lives of our esteemed sons will not escape punishment," emphasizing that the relevant authorities will not hesitate to pursue those involved, and that they will be arrested and brought to justice.
He described the attack as a result of "terrorist takfiri thought" and "blind extremism," stressing that Jordan will not allow society to go down this path, and that the government will take the utmost legal measures against anyone who incites discord or attempts to create an entry point for extremism in Jordanian society.
Hassan issued a statement declaring a nationwide mourning period of three days, starting today, with flags at half-mast over the buildings of ministries, official departments, institutions, and public bodies.
In a press conference held by the Minister of Government Communication and the official spokesperson for the Jordanian government, Mohammad Al-Momani, and the Minister of Health, Ibrahim Al-Badour, following the ministerial session, Al-Badour announced that the number of fatalities from the attack reached 7, while the number of injured was 40.
For his part, Al-Momani clarified that the relevant authorities are working to complete the requirements of the investigation, and that they will announce information and details after verifying them.
He confirmed that the attack represents an assault on all of Jordan, and that any attack on a Jordanian, regardless of their religion or belief, is an assault on the entire Jordanian community.
He emphasized that the attack will not succeed in instilling fear or sowing discord among Jordanians or undermining their unity, cohesion, and values of coexistence, affirming that what happened in Karak stemmed from extremist takfiri thought that is alien to Jordanian society.
