The Italian police fired tear gas and used water hoses to disperse protesters in the cities of Milan and Bologna today (Saturday), following clashes that erupted during protests against rising living costs, resulting in injuries to several individuals and the arrest of others.
Italian media reported that the clashes broke out in the square opposite Milan Cathedral after police officers were attacked by protesters who threw stones and other objects at them.
The Italian news agency (ANSA) reported that police used water hoses in Bologna, in the northern part of the country, to disperse crowds and arrested seven people after another protest turned into violence.
In Milan, police forces equipped with riot gear moved to push masked protesters away from the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a luxury shopping complex near the cathedral square, after they separated from a larger protest against rising living costs.
Shops closed their doors, while tourists left the central area amid the tensions that the city was experiencing.
For her part, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the violence, stating via the platform "X": "Protesting is a right, but turning our cities into battlefields is not a right."
