North Korea accused Japan today (Saturday) of preparing for an "aggressive war," strongly criticizing its move to increase its defense budget.
Japanese media, including the local "NHK" station, reported this week that the Ministry of Defense has requested a record budget for the upcoming fiscal year, estimated at around 8.9 trillion yen (56 billion dollars).
The official Korean Central News Agency in Pyongyang commented on this request, stating that it "will once again shatter all historical records."
It noted that this request, although not yet officially approved, clearly indicates a dangerous increase in the war budget that will cause new crises in the region and the world, predicting that this massive rise in military spending will enhance military power to prepare for an aggressive war.
In recent years, Japan has eased its strict adherence to the pacifism principle it has followed since the end of World War II, as it raises military expenditures, strengthens defense agreements, and deploys missile launchers on its remote islands.
The United States, a long-time ally of Japan and South Korea, is seeking to open a line with Pyongyang after President Donald Trump decided to scale back the annual military exercises with Seoul to deter potential threats from nuclear-armed North Korea. Trump announced that he would meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this year.
China, considered North Korea's main ally, recently expressed concern over what it sees as a "new militarization" by Japan.
The government of Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi is significantly reviewing the national defense strategy this year in an effort to address China's increasing military ambitions.
Tokyo has lifted its self-imposed ban on arms exports and increased its defense spending while intensifying pressure to amend its pacifist constitution.
Defense Minister Shingo Koizumi reaffirmed last week during his visit to a memorial for Japanese who died in World War II the government's commitment to continue bearing its responsibility in maintaining the path Japan has taken since the war as a peace-loving nation.
