يعتزم وزير الجيش الأمريكي دان دريسكول مغادرة منصبه قبل نهاية العام الحالي، بعد أشهر من التوتر مع وزير الحرب بيت هيغسيث، وفق ما نقلت صحيفة «وول ستريت جورنال» عن مصادر مطلعة.
ومن شأن مغادرة دريسكول أن تترك الجيش الأمريكي دون وزير مصادق عليه من مجلس الشيوخ، بالتزامن مع شغور منصب رئيس أركان الجيش، منذ أن أقال هيغسيث في أبريل الماضي الجنرال راندي جورج.
ويتولى نائب رئيس أركان الجيش الجنرال كريستوفر لانيف، الذي سبق أن عمل مساعداً عسكرياً بارزاً لهيغسيث، منصب رئيس الأركان بالوكالة.
ونقلت الصحيفة عن المصادرقولها: إن دريسكول وعائلته غادروا، خلال الصيف، المنزل العائلي الكبير المخصص لوزير الجيش في قاعدة ماير هندرسون هول المشتركة، المجاورة لمقبرة أرلينجتون، حيث يقيم عدد من كبار مسؤولي الدفاع.
وانتقلت عائلته إلى ولاية نورث كارولاينا، بينما انتقل دريسكول إلى شقة أصغر داخل القاعدة العسكرية. ويرتبط دريسكول بصداقة طويلة مع نائب الرئيس الأمريكي جي دي فانس، لكنه أثار استياء هيغسيث في الأيام الأولى لإدارة ترمب، بعدما عرض تنظيم زيارة لفانس وترمب للقاء جنود ومناقشة إصلاح الجيش، وفق تقرير سابق للصحيفة.
وأقام دريسكول، خلال 18 شهراً في منصبه، شراكة وثيقة مع رئيس أركان الجيش السابق الجنرال راندي جورج، وعمل المسؤولان على تسريع تبني الجيش تقنيات جديدة، باعتبارها عاملاً رئيسياً في مستقبل الحروب.
وسافر دريسكول وجورج إلى أوكرانيا برفقة الجنرال كريس دوناهيو، القائد السابق للقوات البرية الأمريكية في أوروبا، حيث أجرى دريسكول محادثات مع الرئيس الأوكراني فولوديمير زيلينسكي بشأن مفاوضات السلام.
وشجع دريسكول الجيش الأمريكي على الاستفادة من تجربة القوات الأوكرانية في ساحات القتال. لكن هيغسيث أقال الجنرال جورج في أبريل، وعيّن لانيف رئيساً لأركان الجيش بالوكالة، في خطوة أثارت انتقادات من نواب جمهوريين في الكونغرس.
وقال دريسكول خلال جلسة استماع في الكونغرس، رداً على سؤال بشأن إقالة جورج: «أنا أيضاً أحب الجنرال جورج»، ووصفه بأنه «قائد مذهل».
وشهدت فترة دريسكول تعهد شركات خاصة بإنفاق أكثر من 25 مليار دولار لإنشاء مراكز بيانات ومصاف للمعادن الحيوية، ومرافق لتقديم الطعام داخل قواعد الجيش في أنحاء الولايات المتحدة. وركز دريسكول على تحديث البنية التحتية العسكرية وتوسيع الشراكة مع القطاع الخاص، ضمن جهوده لتسريع تحول الجيش وتبني تقنيات جديدة.
ورغم الخلافات مع هيغسيث، أشاد ترمب بدريسكول خلال مؤتمر دفاعي في بنسلفانيا الشهر الماضي، قائلاً إن مظهره الودود يخفي شخصية «شديدة الحزم»، وأضاف: «هؤلاء هم أفضل الرجال في الواقع».
U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll intends to leave his position before the end of the current year, following months of tension with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal.
Driscoll's departure would leave the U.S. Army without a Senate-confirmed secretary, coinciding with the vacancy of the Chief of Staff position, since Hegseth dismissed General Randy George last April.
The acting Chief of Staff is Army Vice Chief of Staff General Christopher Lanier, who previously served as a senior military aide to Hegseth.
The newspaper reported that Driscoll and his family left the large official residence designated for the Army Secretary at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, adjacent to Arlington Cemetery, where several senior defense officials reside, during the summer.
His family moved to North Carolina, while Driscoll relocated to a smaller apartment within the military base. Driscoll has a long-standing friendship with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, but he angered Hegseth in the early days of the Trump administration after proposing to organize a visit for Vance and Trump to meet with soldiers and discuss military reform, according to a previous report by the newspaper.
During his 18 months in office, Driscoll forged a close partnership with former Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, and the two officials worked to accelerate the Army's adoption of new technologies, viewing them as a key factor in the future of warfare.
Driscoll and George traveled to Ukraine alongside General Chris Donahue, the former commander of U.S. ground forces in Europe, where Driscoll held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding peace negotiations.
Driscoll encouraged the U.S. Army to learn from the experiences of Ukrainian forces on the battlefield. However, Hegseth dismissed General George in April and appointed Lanier as acting Chief of Staff, a move that drew criticism from Republican lawmakers in Congress.
During a congressional hearing, Driscoll responded to a question about George's dismissal by saying, "I also love General George," describing him as an "amazing leader."
Driscoll's tenure saw private companies pledge to spend over $25 billion to establish data centers, bio-mineral refineries, and dining facilities within Army bases across the United States. He focused on modernizing military infrastructure and expanding partnerships with the private sector as part of his efforts to accelerate the Army's transformation and adopt new technologies.
Despite the disagreements with Hegseth, Trump praised Driscoll during a defense conference in Pennsylvania last month, stating that his friendly demeanor hides a "very tough" personality, adding, "These are the best men, in fact."
