Sources familiar with the matter have revealed details about "deals" in the energy sector aimed at ending the Ukraine war, discussed by officials from both the American and Russian governments on the sidelines of negotiations that took place during August. Western media outlets reported that these deals were proposed as "incentives" to encourage Russia to agree to peace in Ukraine and to encourage the United States to ease sanctions on Moscow. The sources disclosed that officials discussed the possibility of ExxonMobil re-entering the Russian Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project.

According to the sources, who requested anonymity, officials raised the possibility that Russia might purchase American equipment for its liquefied natural gas projects, such as the Arctic LNG 2 project, which is subject to Western sanctions.

It is worth noting that Russia has been deprived of most international investments in the energy sector and of entering into major deals due to the sanctions imposed after the outbreak of the Ukraine war in February 2022.

Media outlets revealed on August 15 another idea that was proposed, which involves the United States buying nuclear-powered icebreaker ships from Russia.

The sources indicated that the discussions took place during the visit of American envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow earlier this month to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev. They confirmed that these deals were discussed within the White House with President Donald Trump and were mentioned during the recent Alaska summit.

A White House official, when asked about these deals, simply stated that Trump and his national security team continue to communicate with Russian and Ukrainian officials to arrange a bilateral meeting to stop the killing and end the war.

The official mentioned that continuing to discuss such matters publicly is not in the national interest. Dmitriev's spokesperson declined to comment.
