أعلن وزير الخارجية الأمريكي ماركو روبيو، اليوم (الأربعاء)، أن أمريكا ستقرر بشأن العقوبات على روسيا قريباً، موضحاً أنه أنهى اتصالاً بالمبعوث الأمريكي إلى روسيا ستيف ويتكوف المتواجد في موسكو وسيجري المزيد من النقاشات اليوم.
وقال روبيو: «نأمل أن تكون هناك بعض الإعلانات قريباً، ربما تكون إيجابية، وربما لا»، وعند سؤاله عما إذا كانت العقوبات ضد روسيا ستدخل حيز التنفيذ هذا الأسبوع، قال وزير الخارجية الأمريكي، إنه سيدلي بمزيد من التصريحات في وقت لاحق اليوم.
وتأتي تصريحات ربيو قبل أقل من 48 ساعة من انتهاء المهلة التي حددها الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب لروسيا بالـ8 من أغسطس الجاري للوصول إلى اتفاق بشأن إنهاء الحرب في أوكرانيا.
ونقل موقع «أكسيوس»، عن مصدر مطلع قوله: ترمب يتحدث حالياً عبر الهاتف مع نظيره الأوكراني فولوديمير زيلينسكي، وهي ثاني مكالمة بين الطرفين هذا الأسبوع.
وكان الرئيس الروسي فلاديمير بوتين قد استقبل في وقت سابق اليوم المبعوث الأمريكي ستيف ويتكوف في الكرملين، بعد أن اعتبرت موسكو أن تحسين العلاقات بين موسكو وواشنطن «سيستغرق وقتاً».
ووصف الكرملين اجتماع بوتين ويتكوف بأنه «مفيد وبنّاء»، وبحسب مساعد الرئيس الروسي لشؤون السياسة الخارجية يوري أوشاكوف فإن الجانبين ناقشا الحرب في أوكرانيا، وإمكانية تحسين العلاقات الأمريكية-الروسية، موضحاً أن موسكو تلقت «إشارات» محددة من ترمب وبعثت برسائل في المقابل.
وفي سياق متصل، وقع الرئيس الأمريكي، في وقت سابق اليوم، أمراً تنفيذياً بمضاعفة الرسوم الجمركية على الواردات من الهند إلى 50%، وذلك بسبب مواصلة نيودلهي شراء النفط الروسي، في خطوة تمهد لاتخاذ إجراءات مماثلة ضد دول أخرى.
من جهتها، أكدت نيودلهي، أنها لن توقف وارداتها من النفط الروسي، واتهمت الدول الغربية بـ«النفاق» بسبب علاقاتها الاقتصادية مع موسكو.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced today (Wednesday) that America will soon decide on sanctions against Russia, explaining that he has concluded a call with the U.S. envoy to Russia, Steve Witkoff, who is in Moscow, and will hold further discussions today.
Rubio said, “We hope there will be some announcements soon, which may be positive, or may not be.” When asked whether sanctions against Russia would come into effect this week, the U.S. Secretary of State stated that he would make further statements later today.
Rubio's remarks come less than 48 hours before the deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump for Russia on August 8 to reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
The Axios website reported, citing an informed source, that Trump is currently speaking on the phone with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, marking the second call between the two this week.
Earlier today, Russian President Vladimir Putin received U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff at the Kremlin, after Moscow indicated that improving relations between Moscow and Washington “will take time.”
The Kremlin described the meeting between Putin and Witkoff as “useful and constructive,” and according to Russian presidential aide for foreign policy Yuri Ushakov, the two sides discussed the war in Ukraine and the possibility of improving U.S.-Russian relations, noting that Moscow received “specific signals” from Trump and sent messages in return.
In a related context, the U.S. President earlier today signed an executive order to double tariffs on imports from India to 50%, due to New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil, a move that paves the way for similar actions against other countries.
For its part, New Delhi confirmed that it will not stop its imports of Russian oil, accusing Western countries of “hypocrisy” due to their economic ties with Moscow.
