President Donald Trump hinted last night (Tuesday) that his vice president, J.D. Vance, could be the expected heir to the "Make America Great Again" campaign, referring to the upcoming 2028 presidential election.
In response to a question about whether he expected his vice president to be the next president, Trump said, "Yes, let's be fair... he is the vice president," but quickly added, "I think Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, is also a good person and could meet with J.D.... I also think we have great people, but I believe it is too early to discuss this topic right now."
It is worth noting that J.D. Vance, who transitioned from being an opponent of Trump to defending his positions, has recently taken on a more prominent role in various domestic and foreign issues, appearing calm and diplomatic in several television interviews.
Vance was born in 1982 into a poor family in Middletown, Ohio, an industrial area within what is known as the "Rust Belt," which has been severely affected by economic decline and mass factory closures. He grew up in a broken family; his biological father left home early, leaving him with a mother who married multiple times.
His grandmother took on the responsibility of raising him, and he recounted his story in a famous book, "Hillbilly Elegy," published in 2016, which was turned into a Netflix film in 2020. Despite the poverty, he managed to overcome hardships, studied law, and then began his career as a lawyer in major firms.
He later transitioned into investment, working at companies like Mithril Capital and co-founding Narya Capital.
After that, he became involved in politics, and the Catholic Vance, known for his conservative leanings, was elected as a member of the Senate from Ohio in 2022.
Despite initially criticizing Trump, he became one of his most prominent supporters, and Trump chose him to be his running mate in the 2024 presidential campaign, officially taking office in January 2025.
