Brazilian Finance Minister Fernando Haddad stated that any phone call between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his American counterpart Donald Trump would require guarantees that Lula would not face the same treatment as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He pointed out that Zelensky faced "an embarrassing situation in the White House" after receiving harsh criticism from Trump and his deputy J.D. Vance during a heated discussion.

Regarding the efforts to negotiate the high American tariffs on Brazilian exports, Haddad told CNN Brazil today (Wednesday) that the government is seeking to find channels to bring the discussion back to a rational path.

Relations between the United States and Brazil have seen a notable escalation in recent weeks, surpassing the personal dispute between Presidents Trump and da Silva, and taking on political, economic, and strategic dimensions amid increasing competition for influence in Latin America amid a fierce struggle over the future of the global financial system.

President Trump has threatened to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports starting from August 1, as part of his campaign to reshape American trade relations through stricter negotiations.
