U.S. President Donald Trump announced today (Saturday) that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to meet immediately and quickly reach prospects for a ceasefire, expressing his hope to conclude trade agreements with both countries.
Trump stated in a post on the "Truth Social" platform that he had a phone call with the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand to push for a ceasefire as fighting continues along the border between the two countries for the third day, describing his call with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet as "very good."
He noted that he briefed the latter on discussions with Thailand and its designated Prime Minister, indicating that both sides are seeking an immediate ceasefire and achieving peace, and that they are looking forward to returning to the trade table with the United States, which he sees as inappropriate at this time unless the fighting stops.
He pointed out that the two countries agreed to meet immediately and work quickly to reach a ceasefire, and then achieve peace, emphasizing: "We hope that good relations will prevail between the two countries for many years to come."
He added: "When things are settled and peace is restored, I look forward to concluding trade agreements with both," noting that he spoke to the interim Thai Prime Minister and sensed his desire for an immediate ceasefire and peace, and that he would convey this message to the Prime Minister of Cambodia.
Trump said: "After talking to both sides, it seems that a ceasefire, peace, and prosperity are the natural and logical options; we will see what happens soon."
Cambodian officials had announced earlier today that 12 people had been killed in the fighting with Thailand, which has entered its third day, raising the death toll from both sides to 32.
