The United States announced today (Tuesday) its intention to withdraw once again from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), attributing this to the organization's support for initiatives that conflict with American interests, just two years after its return to the organization.

The U.S. informed UNESCO's Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, today of its decision to withdraw from the organization, stating that continued participation in UNESCO does not serve the national interest of the United States.

Azoulay expressed her regret over the United States' decision to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, while affirming that it was expected, emphasizing: "I am very sorry about President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from UNESCO, and although it is regrettable, it was anticipated and UNESCO was prepared for it."

For her part, White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated that President Donald Trump made the decision to withdraw the United States from UNESCO because the organization supports initiatives that do not align with American interests.

The New York Post quoted Kelly as saying: "President Trump made the decision to withdraw the United States from UNESCO, which supports cultural and social initiatives that contradict the cultural and social initiatives and are completely at odds with the rational policy that Americans voted for in November," noting that the Trump administration closely monitors ensuring that the country's membership in all international organizations aligns with the national interests of the United States.

Under Article II (6) of the UNESCO Constitution, the United States' withdrawal will take effect on December 31, and the United States will remain a full member of UNESCO until that time.
