The American authorities announced today (Monday) that 9 people were killed and at least 30 were injured in a fire that broke out at a nursing home in the Fall River area of Massachusetts. According to press reports, about 70 people live in the facility.
The state’s fire department said in a statement that firefighters responded to the fire that broke out at Gabriel House nursing home in Fall River on Sunday evening, adding: Firefighters found themselves facing thick smoke and flames at the front of the building while residents were trapped inside.
U.S. authorities reported that the fire was brought under control this morning, and firefighters were able to enter and rescue several residents. The Boston Globe quoted Jeffrey Bacon, the director of the Fall River Fire Department, as saying that some people were trapped at the windows when the firefighting team arrived.
Jeffrey described what happened as "an incomprehensible tragedy for the affected families and the Fall River community," explaining that the matter is under investigation.
Many of those rescued were taken to local and regional hospitals and were in varying conditions. According to authorities, 5 firefighters sustained injuries that are not life-threatening.
