While maritime security sources confirmed the detention of 6 sailors from the ship they sank in the Red Sea, the European Union mission (EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI) announced today (Thursday) the rescue of 4 additional people who were on board a cargo ship that sank in the Red Sea following an attack by the Houthis on it off the coast of Yemen this week.

“EUNAVFOR MED” wrote in a post on the platform “X”: “On the night of July 9/10, 3 additional crew members of the ship Eternity Sea, who hold Philippine nationality, and one member of the maritime security team who holds Greek nationality were rescued from the sea, bringing the total number of those rescued to 10,” indicating that the total number on board the ship was 25 people, including crew members and security personnel, and the fate of the remaining individuals who have not been reported as rescued is still unclear.

The Houthis had acknowledged their responsibility for the attack on the cargo ship “Eternity Sea” off the coast of Yemen in a new escalation of their attacks on vessels in the vital maritime corridor, confirming that a number of the ship's crew were rescued.

Three crew members were killed in the attack on the ship, and at least two others were injured, one of whom was a Russian electrician who lost his leg. The attack on the ship “Eternity Sea” is the second in less than 24 hours.

The Houthis showcased images of the attack on the ship, confirming that they targeted it with missiles and drones and stormed it before detonating it in the middle of the sea.

The U.S. Embassy in Yemen condemned the attack, accusing the Houthis of killing and abducting several crew members of the ship and obstructing rescue efforts, demanding their immediate and unconditional release.
