After a day of threatening to arrest him if he obstructs the operations of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency should he be elected mayor of New York City, U.S. President Donald Trump today (Wednesday) attacked the Democratic candidate for the New York City mayoralty, Zahran Mamdani, asserting that he will not allow him to destroy New York.
Trump stated in a post on his "Truth Social" account: "As President of the United States, I will not allow this crazy communist to destroy New York," adding, "Rest assured, I have all the resources and all the papers; I will save New York City, and I will make it exciting and great again, just as I did with the great United States."
Trump had said on Tuesday: "We will have to arrest" Mamdani if he follows through on his promise to "stop the work of immigration agents," adding, "We do not need a communist in this country, but if we get one, I will watch him very closely on behalf of the nation."
In contrast, Mamdani condemned Trump's threats, considering the U.S. president's statements to be nothing but an attack on democracy and an attempt to intimidate him.
Mamdani wrote on the "X" platform: "Trump's threats are not because I have violated any law, but because I will refuse to allow the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to terrorize our city," adding, "His statements are not just an attack on our democracy but an attempt to send a message to every citizen in New York who refuses to hide in the shadows: If you speak up, they will come for you." He noted that they will not accept this intimidation.
Mamdani's victory, the Muslim born in Uganda who describes himself as a "democratic socialist," over seasoned politician Andrew Cuomo was a surprise among Democrats, and the New York City Board of Elections described his victory in the Democratic primary for the mayoralty as stunning, paving the way for him to be the party's candidate in the upcoming mayoral election in November.
Polling results showed that Mamdani received 56% of the votes in the third round of voting, where winning requires more than 50% of the votes, and Mamdani was an unknown member of the New York State Assembly when he began his campaign.
