The Russian forces surprised Ukraine with the largest aerial attack since the outbreak of the war on February 24, 2022. A Ukrainian official announced that Russia launched its largest airstrike last night as part of an escalating bombing campaign that dashed hopes for progress in efforts to end the war that has been ongoing for more than three years.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported today (Sunday) that Russia launched a total of 537 aerial weapons against Ukraine, including 477 drones and other decoy aircraft, and 60 missiles.

It clarified that 249 drones were shot down, while 226 other drones were likely lost through electronic warfare means.

For his part, Yuri Ihnat, the head of communications for the Ukrainian Air Force, revealed that the airstrike carried out overnight is the "largest aerial attack" the country has faced, considering the number of drones and the various types of missiles used, according to the Associated Press.

Ihnat mentioned that the attack targeted areas across Ukraine, including the western part of the country, far from the front lines.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Friday that his country is ready for a new round of direct peace talks in Istanbul. He stated during a press conference on the sidelines of a regional summit in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, that discussing the memorandums of understanding between the two countries would be the subject of negotiations with Kyiv, expressing his gratitude to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his role in reaching agreements between the two sides in Istanbul that have been implemented.

The parties to the conflict held two rounds of talks in Istanbul, but without reaching results that would achieve a lasting ceasefire.
