The Syrian Islamic Council announced today (Saturday) that it has dissolved itself along with all its affiliated institutions, confirming in a statement on its website that the dissolution came in response to a request from the Syrian state.
The council, which describes itself as a moderate Syrian legal reference body established in mid-April 2014, aiming to unify the voices of scholars, preachers, and representatives of legal entities, stated: "In response to the request of the Syrian state, the council announces its dissolution, along with all its affiliated institutions, after achieving many of the goals for which it was established." It added: "The council urges all its members to contribute positively and effectively to the success and enrichment of the new phase, utilizing their experiences and qualifications, and to unify efforts among those working in the fields of education, guidance, and advocacy," expressing gratitude to all its members and to everyone who supported it in all forms of assistance.
It pointed out that after liberation, a new era began, titled the building of the state with all its institutions, including the reconstruction of the official religious institution, which was distorted by the fallen regime and exploited to serve its interests, thus losing much of its credibility. One of the decisions made by the new state was to dissolve all institutions in order to find their place in the new construction and to keep pace with the new conditions after liberation. Therefore, in response to the request of the Syrian state, the Syrian Islamic Council was dissolved.
