جرفت الفيضانات في شمال غرب باكستان 32 شخصاً نصفهم من الأطفال بعد أمطار غزيرة شهدتها المناطق الجبلية منذ الأربعاء، ووفقاً لمسؤولين في إدارة الطوارئ والكوارث في إقليم خيبر بختونخوا فإن فيضانات مفاجئة وانهيارات أسطح تسبّبت بمقتل 19 شخصاً، بينهم ثمانية أطفال.
وقالت الإدارة إن ستة أشخاص أصيبوا بجروح فيما ألحقت الفيضانات أضراراً بـ56 منزلاً، دُمرت ستة منها. وبحسب التقارير فإن 13 من القتلى في خيبر بختونخوا، وبينهم خمسة أطفال كانوا في وادي سوات، كما جرفت الفيضانات عائلات على ضفة نهر، بحسب وسائل إعلام محلية.
وفي البنجاب، الإقليم الأكثر كثافة سكانية في البلاد والبالغ عدد سكانه نحو 130 مليون نسمة والواقع في الشرق على الحدود مع الهند، سجلت هيئة إدارة الكوارث مصرع 13 شخصاً منذ الأربعاء ومن بين الضحايا ثمانية أطفال، لقوا حتفهم جميعاً في انهيار أسقف أو جدران. في حين قضى البالغون بسبب فيضانات مفاجئة في أنهار البنجاب، بحسب السلطات المحلية.
وكانت هيئة الأرصاد الجوية الوطنية قد حذرت الأسبوع الماضي من خطر هطول أمطار غزيرة واحتمال حدوث فيضانات مفاجئة سيظل مرتفعاً حتى الثلاثاء على الأقل.
The floods in northwestern Pakistan have swept away 32 people, half of whom are children, following heavy rains that have affected mountainous areas since Wednesday. According to officials from the Emergency and Disaster Management Authority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, sudden floods and roof collapses have resulted in the deaths of 19 people, including eight children.
The authority stated that six people were injured, and the floods caused damage to 56 houses, six of which were destroyed. Reports indicate that 13 of the deceased in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including five children, were in the Swat Valley, and the floods swept away families on the riverbank, according to local media.
In Punjab, the most densely populated province in the country with a population of about 130 million, located in the east on the border with India, the Disaster Management Authority has recorded the deaths of 13 people since Wednesday, among whom are eight children, all of whom died in roof or wall collapses. Meanwhile, adults perished due to sudden floods in the rivers of Punjab, according to local authorities.
The National Meteorological Department had warned last week of the risk of heavy rainfall and the likelihood of sudden floods, which will remain high at least until Tuesday.
