A prominent Democratic representative in the Minnesota House of Representatives and her husband were killed today (Saturday), according to Governor Tim Walz, who stated that a gunman disguised as a police officer shot them in what appears to be a politically motivated assassination, injuring another legislator and his wife.
Law enforcement officials explained at a press conference that the victims are Democratic Representative Melissa Hortman, a member and former speaker of the state House, and her husband Mark. They confirmed that a large-scale operation is underway to search for the suspect who fled on foot after shooting at police, leaving a vehicle in which a "statement" was found listing the names of legislators and other officials.
Governor Tim Walz noted that the gunman went to the Hortman family's home in Brooklyn Park after shooting several times at Senator John Hoffman and his wife at their home in Champlin, explaining that Hoffman and his wife underwent surgeries.
He pointed out that there is cautious optimism regarding their survival from the assassination attempt, stating that "the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement are on the scene, and we will share more information soon."
He emphasized, saying: "This was an act of targeted political violence," while police urged residents not to open the door to anyone claiming to be a police officer unless there are two officers together, or to call emergency services to verify their identity.
The Brooklyn Park Police indicated that they sent a stay-at-home alert at 5:30 AM to homes within a 3-mile radius of the Edinburgh Golf Course, stating that they are searching for a suspect in targeted shootings, who is armed and dangerous, a white male with brown hair, wearing black body armor over a blue shirt and blue pants.
At least two people were killed (Tuesday), while 9 others were injured in a mass shooting inside the Vermont Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
