وقّعت «فيرتكس» للأدوية، الشركة الرائدة عالميا في مجال التكنولوجيا الحيوية، اليوم، مذكرة تفاهم مع وزارة الصحة السعودية لتحسين خدمات الرعاية الصحية للمصابين بمرض فقر الدم المنجلي والثلاسيميا بيتا في المملكة. يجسّد هذا التعاون الإستراتيجي التزام «فيرتكس» بدعم رؤية السعودية 2030 والإستراتيجية الوطنية للتكنولوجيا الحيوية، ويأتي استكمالا للاتفاقية السابقة التي وقّعتها الشركة عام 2024 مع ثلاث وزارات سعودية.
علاجات متطورة
أسست الاتفاقية السابقة قاعدة متينة لتقديم علاجات متطورة بالخلايا والجينات للمرضى في المملكة. وفي هذا الإطار، أصبح مستشفى مدينة الملك فهد الطبية أول منشأة صحية حكومية تحصل على ترخيص لتقديم العلاج الجيني التجاري لمرضى فقر الدم المنجلي والثلاسيميا بيتا المعتمدة على نقل الدم. كما أطلقت «فيرتكس» ثلاث دراسات سريرية، ونظّمت سلسلة من البرامج التعليمية والتدريبية استفاد منها أكثر من 100 متخصص في المملكة. وأطلقت اليوم «سلسلة الندوات العلمية» -وهو برنامج تدريبي متخصص تم تطويره بالشراكة مع وزارة الصحة لتطوير مهارات الكوادر السعودية في مجالات العلاج الخلوي والجيني وعلم الجينوم- خلال فعاليات ملتقى الصحة العالمي. كما تواصل الشركة مناقشاتها مع مؤسسات التصنيع المحلية بهدف إنتاج العلاجات محليا لخدمة المرضى في المنطقة.
دعم الابتكار العلمي
وتؤكد مذكرة التفاهم الجديدة مواصلة «فيرتكس» التزامها بدعم الابتكار العلمي لخدمة المرضى في السعودية. ويتضمن التعاون توسيع السجل الوطني للمرضى لجمع البيانات في المجالات الطبية والبحثية والعلمية لدعم الأبحاث المتعلقة بفقر الدم المنجلي والثلاسيميا بيتا. كما تشمل الشراكة إطلاق حملات توعوية وطنية لزيادة الوعي المجتمعي باضطرابات الدم الوراثية وأهمية الكشف المبكر عنها. إلى جانب ذلك، سيتم تطوير برامج تدريبية مشتركة للطواقم الطبية والعلمية لبناء الكفاءات والقدرات. وبناء على النجاح الذي تحقق منذ توقيع الاتفاقية الأولى، تهدف المذكرة الجديدة إلى تسريع الوصول إلى برامج الوزارة المتخصصة بأمراض فقر الدم المنجلي والثلاسيما بيتا والدفع نحو تحقيق الهدف المشترك المتمثل بتعزيز الوصول الوطني إلى العلاجات.
ونوقشت إنجازات التعاون وآفاقه المستقبلية خلال جلسة حوارية في ملتقى الصحة العالمي تحت عنوان «تشكيل مستقبل العلاجات المتقدمة في المملكة العربية السعودية»، بحضور ممثلين رفيعي المستوى من وزارة الصحة ووزارة الصناعة والثروة المعدنية ووزارة الاستثمار وشركة «فيرتكس».
وبهذه المناسبة، قال هشام حجر، المدير العام لشركة فيرتيكس في دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي: «تمثل هذه الاتفاقية خطوة أخرى نحو تعزيز الابتكار الطبي في المملكة، وتُظهر تصميمنا على تحقيق تقدم في مفاوضات الوصول إلى العلاجات للمرضى المؤهلين، مع بناء قدرات وطنية مستدامة في مجال العلاجات المتقدمة. فالتقدم الذي أحرزناه منذ توقيع الاتفاقية الأولى يعكس متانة شراكتنا مع المؤسسات السعودية وطموحنا المشترك لترسيخ مكانة المملكة كرائدة في مجال العلاجات الجينية. ونحن نتطلع إلى مواصلة هذا التعاون مع جميع الأطراف لتحقيق هدفنا المشتمل في توفير العلاج على نطاق وطني».
Vertex Pharmaceuticals, a global leader in biotechnology, today signed a memorandum of understanding with the Saudi Ministry of Health to improve healthcare services for patients with sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia in the Kingdom. This strategic collaboration embodies Vertex's commitment to supporting Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Biotechnology Strategy, and it follows a previous agreement signed by the company in 2024 with three Saudi ministries.
Advanced Treatments
The previous agreement established a solid foundation for providing advanced cell and gene therapies to patients in the Kingdom. In this context, King Fahd Medical City Hospital became the first government health facility to obtain a license to provide commercial gene therapy for patients with sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia reliant on blood transfusions. Vertex has also launched three clinical studies and organized a series of educational and training programs that benefited over 100 specialists in the Kingdom. Today, it launched the "Scientific Seminar Series" - a specialized training program developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health to enhance the skills of Saudi personnel in the fields of cell and gene therapy and genomics - during the Global Health Forum. The company continues its discussions with local manufacturing institutions with the aim of producing treatments locally to serve patients in the region.
Supporting Scientific Innovation
The new memorandum of understanding reaffirms Vertex's commitment to supporting scientific innovation to serve patients in Saudi Arabia. The collaboration includes expanding the national patient registry to collect data in medical, research, and scientific fields to support research related to sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia. The partnership also includes launching national awareness campaigns to increase community awareness of genetic blood disorders and the importance of early detection. Additionally, joint training programs will be developed for medical and scientific staff to build competencies and capabilities. Based on the success achieved since the signing of the first agreement, the new memorandum aims to accelerate access to the ministry's specialized programs for sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia and drive towards achieving the shared goal of enhancing national access to treatments.
Achievements of the collaboration and its future prospects were discussed during a panel session at the Global Health Forum titled "Shaping the Future of Advanced Therapies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," attended by high-level representatives from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Investment, and Vertex.
On this occasion, Hisham Hajar, General Manager of Vertex in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, stated: "This agreement represents another step towards enhancing medical innovation in the Kingdom and demonstrates our determination to make progress in negotiations for access to treatments for eligible patients while building sustainable national capabilities in advanced therapies.
