شاركت المملكة ممثلة بمحافظ هيئة الاتصالات والفضاء والتقنية المكلف المهندس هيثم العوهلي في أعمال الاجتماع السنوي للجنة الأمم المتحدة للنطاق العريض والتنمية المستدامة، الذي يُعقد هذا العام كنسخة خاصة احتفاءً بمرور 15 عاماً على تأسيس اللجنة، في إطار جهود المملكة في تعزيز التحول الرقمي، وتنمية الاقتصاد الرقمي العالمي، وتقليص الفجوة الرقمية، فضلاً عن تمكين الوصول إلى خدمات الاتصالات والتقنية.
وأكد العوهلي -في كلمته خلال الاجتماع- التزام المملكة الراسخ بتحقيق تنمية رقمية عادلة ومستدامة، مشيداً بجهود اللجنة في دعم تحقيق أهداف التنمية المستدامة للأمم المتحدة، موضحاً أن الهيئة -التي تم تصنيفها كمنظم قيادي من الاتحاد الدولي للاتصالات- تنفذ العديد من المبادرات داخل المملكة وخارجها، بالتعاون مع الشركاء الدوليين لتحقيق الأهداف العالمية.
وحول استعراض الجهود الوطنية، أوضح العوهلي توافق الإستراتيجية الوطنية مع أجندة «الاتصال 2030» للاتحاد الدولي للاتصالات، مشيراً إلى أن المملكة تعمل مع الاتحاد على تحديث دراسة «ربط البشرية من خلال حلول مستدامة وميسورة ومبتكرة»؛ بهدف تحديد فجوات الاتصال ووضع حلول تعزز الوصول الشامل والميسور إلى الإنترنت.
وسلط الضوء على مبادرة النفاذ المفتوح، التي مكّنت من مشاركة البنية التحتية بين مقدمي خدمات الاتصالات، وأسهمت في إيصال الألياف الضوئية لأكثر من 3.9 مليون منزل، متجاوزة الأهداف المحددة مسبقاً، مؤكداً أن المملكة تواصل الاستثمار في تقنيات الشبكات غير الأرضية مثل: الأقمار الصناعية المنخفضة المدار (LEO)، وأنظمة المنصات الجوية (HAPS) لتوسيع التغطية في المناطق النائية.
وعلى المستوى الإقليمي، أشار إلى دور المملكة الريادي في إطلاق «دليل أدوات الاستدامة الرقمية» بالتعاون مع منظمة التعاون الرقمي، إضافة إلى قيادتها لمسار الاقتصاد الرقمي الدائري ضمن مبادرة العمل الرقمي الأخضر للاتحاد الدولي للاتصالات.
وفي ختام كلمته، أكد أن سد الفجوة الرقمية لا يزال أحد أبرز التحديات في عصرنا، داعياً إلى مزيد من العمل المشترك والتعاون.
وتُعد لجنة النطاق العريض من أجل التنمية المستدامة من اللجان التابعة للأمم المتحدة، ويشترك في رئاستها رئيس جمهورية رواندا بول كاغامي، ورجل الأعمال كارلوس سليم، بينما يتولى الأمين العام للاتحاد الدولي للاتصالات، والمدير العام لليونسكو نيابة رئاسة اللجنة، كما تضم اللجنة عدداً من صناع القرار المؤثرين في مجال الاتصالات والتقنية وكبار المسؤولين حول العالم.

The Kingdom, represented by the Acting Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Authority, Engineer Haitham Al-Ohaile, participated in the annual meeting of the United Nations Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, which is being held this year as a special edition to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Commission's establishment, as part of the Kingdom's efforts to enhance digital transformation, develop the global digital economy, and reduce the digital divide, in addition to enabling access to communications and technology services.
Al-Ohaile affirmed - in his speech during the meeting - the Kingdom's steadfast commitment to achieving fair and sustainable digital development, praising the Commission's efforts in supporting the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He explained that the Authority - which has been classified as a leading regulator by the International Telecommunication Union - is implementing many initiatives both within the Kingdom and abroad, in cooperation with international partners to achieve global goals.
Regarding the review of national efforts, Al-Ohaile clarified the alignment of the national strategy with the "Connect 2030" agenda of the International Telecommunication Union, noting that the Kingdom is working with the Union to update the study "Connecting Humanity through Sustainable, Affordable, and Innovative Solutions"; with the aim of identifying connectivity gaps and proposing solutions that enhance inclusive and affordable access to the internet.
He highlighted the Open Access initiative, which has enabled the sharing of infrastructure among telecommunications service providers and contributed to bringing fiber optics to more than 3.9 million homes, exceeding previously set goals. He affirmed that the Kingdom continues to invest in non-terrestrial network technologies such as Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites and High Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) to expand coverage in remote areas.
At the regional level, he pointed to the Kingdom's pioneering role in launching the "Digital Sustainability Toolkit" in collaboration with the Digital Cooperation Organization, in addition to its leadership in the circular digital economy track within the Green Digital Work Initiative of the International Telecommunication Union.
In conclusion, he emphasized that closing the digital divide remains one of the most significant challenges of our time, calling for more joint work and cooperation.

The Commission also includes a number of influential decision-makers in the field of communications and technology and senior officials from around the world.
