أعلن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، أن «الولايات المتحدة تريد مساعدة الصين وليس إلحاق الأذى بها» في لهجة توفيقية، بعد أيام على تهديده بفرض رسوم جمركية إضافية بنسبة 100% على بكين.
وكتب ترمب على منصته للتواصل الاجتماعي «تروث سوشال»: «الولايات المتحدة تريد مساعدة الصين وليس إلحاق الأذى بها»، مضيفاً: «أحترم الرئيس شي جيبينغ، ولا أريد أن تعاني بلاده كساداً».
وأضاف أنه قد يلجأ إلى فرض رسوم جمركية إضافية على ثاني اقتصاد عالمي اعتباراً من الأول من نوفمبر القادم، رداً على ما أسماه قيوداً صينية جديدة «عدوانية للغاية» على الصادرات المتعلقة بالمعادن النادرة.
قيود المعادن
من جهته، قال الممثل التجاري الأمريكي جيميسون جرير إن «واشنطن تواصلت مع الصين لإجراء اتصال هاتفي بعد إعلان بكين التوسع في قائمة قيود تصدير المعادن الأرضية النادرة، لكن الصين أرجأت الاتصال».
وأضاف جرير، اليوم (الأحد): «يمكنني إخباركم بأننا لم نُخطر، وسرعان ما علمنا بذلك من مصادر عامة وتواصلنا مع الصينيين لإجراء اتصال هاتفي، لكنهم أرجأوا ذلك».
وكانت الصين قد انتقدت الرسوم الجمركية الأمريكية الأحدث التي فرضها ترمب على السلع الصينية، ودافعت عن القيود التي فرضتها على صادراتها من المعادن الأرضية النادرة، لكنها لم تصل إلى حد فرض رسوم جديدة على المنتجات الأمريكية، في الوقت الذي حثت الولايات المتحدة على إدارة الخلافات بشكل صحيح من خلال الحوار وعلى أساس الاحترام المتبادل والمشاورات المتكافئة.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that "the United States wants to help China, not harm it" in a conciliatory tone, days after threatening to impose additional tariffs of 100% on Beijing.
Trump wrote on his social media platform "Truth Social": "The United States wants to help China, not harm it," adding, "I respect President Xi Jinping, and I do not want his country to suffer a recession."
He added that he may resort to imposing additional tariffs on the world's second-largest economy starting November 1, in response to what he called new "extremely aggressive" Chinese restrictions on exports related to rare earth metals.
Metal Restrictions
For his part, U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer stated that "Washington has reached out to China for a phone call after Beijing announced the expansion of its list of restrictions on the export of rare earth metals, but China postponed the call."
Greer added today (Sunday): "I can tell you that we were not notified, and we quickly learned about it from public sources and reached out to the Chinese for a phone call, but they postponed it."
China had criticized the latest U.S. tariffs imposed by Trump on Chinese goods and defended the restrictions it imposed on its exports of rare earth metals, but it did not go so far as to impose new tariffs on American products, while urging the United States to manage disputes properly through dialogue based on mutual respect and equal consultations.
