The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, confirmed today that the European Union will remain committed to conducting constructive negotiations with the United States regarding tariffs, with the aim of achieving smooth and mutually beneficial trade.

Von der Leyen stated: "The European Union will continue to be committed to conducting constructive negotiations with Washington, while at the same time, Europe continues to focus on diversifying its trade partnerships and engaging with countries that represent 87 percent of global trade, sharing our commitment to free and open exchange of goods, services, and ideas." She welcomed the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the suspension of reciprocal tariffs until early August, noting that it is an important step towards global economic stability.

The European Union is negotiating with the Trump administration in hopes of obtaining an exemption from tariffs, which include taxes of up to 25% on European cars.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that he would not extend the deadline set for August 1 for the imposition of higher U.S. tariffs on dozens of countries, following what appeared to be signs of flexibility regarding this date.

Trump said: "The United States will begin collecting tariffs on imports from various countries on August 1."

He clarified in a post on his platform "Truth Social" that "there has been no change to this date, and there will be no change."

Trump had stated late yesterday that the new date for implementing tariffs, set for August 1, "is not 100% final," adding: "If they reach out to us and express different positions, we will be open to that," according to a report published by CNBC, which was reviewed by Al Arabiya Business.

His comments came after he sent messages to several countries announcing the imposition of new tariffs on their imports.
