تسألت شبكة «بي بي سي» عن مصير التماثيل العملاقة للنجم الراحل مايكل جاكسون، التي صممت للترويح لألبوم HIStory عام 1995.
وأشارت في تقرير حديث إلى نصب 10 تماثيل في مواقع بارزة حول العالم، أبرزها تمثال ضخم ظهر عائمًا على نهر التايمز في العاصمة البريطانية لندن، في مشهد أثار دهشة سكان المدينة آنذاك.
فيما انتصب تمثال آخر في موقف سيارات تابع لمطعم للمأكولات السريعة في بلدة «بِست» الهولندية، قبل أن يُزال عام 2019، وفي النمسا استقر تمثال آخر في فناء نادٍ ليلي مهجور بالقرب من فيينا، بعدما اقتناه مالك النادي خلال مزاد خيري عام 1998، وتحوّل التمثال حينها إلى نقطة جذب للروّاد والمحتفلين، ومع مرور السنوات، اختفى عدد من هذه التماثيل أو وُضع في مخازن سرية، بينما لا يزال بعضها قائمًا في مواقع غير مألوفة.
هذه الحملة الدعائية الفريدة كانت تهدف إلى الترويج لألبوم مزدوج جمع بين أنجح أغاني جاكسون و15 أغنية جديدة من بينها Earth Song، التي تصدّرت قوائم الأغاني في المملكة المتحدة لستة أسابيع.
وصُمّمت التماثيل من الألياف الزجاجية على يد الفنان ستيفن بايل وفريقه في أستوديوهات «إلستري» البريطانية، دون الوصول إلى النموذج الأصلي للنحاتة الأمريكية ديانا والزاك، ما أدى إلى وجود اختلافات طفيفة في الشكل النهائي.
ورغم رحيل مايكل جاكسون منذ أكثر من 16 عامًا، لا تزال تماثيله شاهدة على مجده الفني، وإن أصبحت جزءًا من جدل دائم بين الإعجاب بالإرث الفني والاتهامات المثيرة للجدل.

The BBC network wondered about the fate of the giant statues of the late star Michael Jackson, which were designed to promote the HIStory album in 1995.
In a recent report, it noted the installation of 10 statues in prominent locations around the world, the most notable of which was a massive statue that appeared floating on the River Thames in the British capital, London, in a scene that astonished the city's residents at the time.
Another statue stood in a parking lot belonging to a fast-food restaurant in the Dutch town of "Best," before being removed in 2019. In Austria, another statue settled in the courtyard of an abandoned nightclub near Vienna, after being acquired by the club's owner during a charity auction in 1998. The statue then became a point of attraction for patrons and celebrants. Over the years, several of these statues have disappeared or been placed in secret storage, while some still stand in unusual locations.
This unique promotional campaign aimed to promote a double album that combined Jackson's most successful songs with 15 new tracks, including Earth Song, which topped the UK charts for six weeks.
The statues were designed from fiberglass by artist Stephen Byle and his team at the British "Ilustri" studios, without access to the original model by American sculptor Diana Walczak, resulting in slight differences in the final shape.
Despite Michael Jackson's passing more than 16 years ago, his statues remain a testament to his artistic glory, even as they have become part of an ongoing debate between admiration for his artistic legacy and controversial accusations.
