It is not easy to recover the experience of a writer whose name has been associated for years with journalistic articles at the height of their popularity and spread; his articles were part of a wide debate about society, culture, education, religion, and tribe.
The journalist Ali Saad Al-Mousa is a writer whose experience cannot be read in isolation from the transformations that have occurred in the place where he wrote.
In this dialogue, we revisit Al-Mousa's experience in journalistic writing, not only through the lens of memory but also with an eye on the present. We discuss with him absence and presence, and the article that has lost many of its old conditions, as well as a time when the writer competes with images and the speed of dissemination. We also revisit intellectual and social issues that were once at the heart of his journalistic battles, and together we reflect: what has changed in them, and what has remained more entrenched than was believed?
Our questions intersected with him on culture, writing, education, and social transformations, and about the impact of words, the value of ideas, and the future of the writer in a time when the relationship between the public and knowledge and opinion has changed.
We opened the old writing notebooks and read them from his current perspective, and it is up to the reader to judge the distance between what was said yesterday and what is happening now. So here is the text of the dialogue...
• Let’s start with absence. Is it a real decline in the cultural community's interest in you as a writer, or have you become more sensitive to the idea of absence?
•• You say cultural and talk about a community. It bothers me that the categorization of public opinion has redefined the community and reduced it to the appearance of the body, like all human phenomena. The community is a mutated being in taste, form, and redefinition.
• Does it bother you that a major cultural event in the region passes without you being invited to it?
•• You say cultural; no, it doesn’t bother me for a simple reason: because not a single cultural event has passed in the last decade. Certainly, there may have been cultural events, but honestly, I go to bed by midnight and I don’t know what happens after that.
• The new generations, do they know the generation of article writers of which you were one of the most prominent names?
•• I don’t think so, but I am sure that my personal imprint in my writing project is present in many aspects of their daily lives. I lived to see what I called for, and that is enough.
• If you met a young writer who started today, what would you tell him about cultural fame?
•• Pay attention to the health of your teeth, for there may come a day when you cannot even pay the dental bill. My teeth are what make me today apologize for television appearances so that I don’t become another (Nazik Al-Malaika) in the journey of life.
• Has the article lost the environment that made it possible and influential?
•• Certainly, you can imagine that a major Saudi university is offering its library for hotel investment. The environment that the question refers to has been emptied and transformed into content for the feasts of the wealthy and the privileged.
• Do you think that platform X has redefined the "writer" so that the opinion holder has become more important than the project owner?
•• I don’t have the exact numbers, but a famous influencer has a thousand times more followers than the top ten Saudi writers in the history of Saudi writing. The audience is generated on such projects: projects of allure.
• Has the speed of interaction with the audience become more tempting than careful writing?
•• Careful writing requires a wealth of knowledge built through reading. Once, I went to Jarir Bookstore and asked for five titles I wanted to buy, and the seller said to me: It seems you are coming out of a long prison, for people today no longer care about wars of ideas. Who convinced these generations that culture is what you request from (Hanger Station) or Amazon? This is the market today.
• What was available to the article writer in Saudi journalism that is no longer available to today’s writer?
•• What is no longer available is the mind and mentality of the recipient. I used to write for readers like Saeed Al-Suhaili, Turki Al-Hamad, Abdu Khal, and Othman Al-Omeir. Nowadays, the head has become just a wheel, and the face has become merely a makeup space to test a woman's ability to attract followers.
• You have written extensively about education... how do you read the journey of Saudi education today compared to what you wrote years ago?
•• I will answer you with something that resembles a shock. One figure mentioned that 95% of high school students do not know the name of the minister, and I might think that this applies to some teachers as well. Take another example: a school with 700 students, with 35 classrooms, three classes go down for physical education at the same time to the basketball court, then they take in the expression class (a sound mind in a sound body), and I hope you excuse me from the rest of the answer so I don’t exceed the available ceiling.
• You wrote early about extremism, religious discourse, and the tribe... how do you view those ideas today that you fought your journalistic battles over?
•• I look at myself first and think that I was either crazy or mentally retarded, but it was the most wonderful madness and the most delightful retardation, and if they went back, I would return, for this is a matter of national belonging that I will not compromise on, even if I have paid a price for it from my life in the past.
• Do you think that Saudi society has truly overcome some of the phenomena you used to criticize, or is there just a change in language and tools?
•• In extremism, for example, the tools still exist, but the language has disappeared. The factory, even if it is dismantled as I used to demand, its production was abundant and covered the market's needs dozens of times over. We need two or three decades for the products of this factory to disappear from the market.
• When you wrote against a social or intellectual phenomenon, did you see yourself as a critic of society or part of the process of reforming it?
•• Neither this nor that; mostly, I was a counselor. The process of reform is based on laws, and this is what has been in this new era, thank God. When I remember today the titles of the National Dialogue seminars, I feel that some of our discourse was closer to Kandahar and the Tora Bora mountains; all that the ruler did was return us to live in the streets of Riyadh and the mountains of Al-Soudah.
• What issue did you think would change quickly, only to discover it is more entrenched than you expected?
•• Today, thank God, I am no longer worried at all about a mother giving birth to a child in this safe country that is assured about the future of its generations. My concern today is for a she-camel carrying in her womb a (dialogue) for an entire year, only to be stripped of its decor on the tables of boastfulness; what is her fault and what is his?
• An article you regretted publishing because it exceeded what a writer should say.
•• Believe me, I have not regretted a single article. Moreover, I may be the daily writer who has never been stopped by the Ministry of Information at all. Once, the late Turki Al-Sudairi told me while we were on a royal trip abroad: You are the only writer who writes such an article (at the time) without a single mistake; everything is written, but the question is: how and in what language.
• What about the gains and losses of writing?
•• My gains from it were topped by my ivory tower with fifty floors on the Corniche of Sarawat Abidah, while my losses were when I discovered that I was the cheapest writer in the history of Saudi journalism, even though I, with all arrogance, not pride, was (Majid Abdullah) for all Saudi article writers. Call it what you will, but I confidently say: I was always the first to catch the idea, and often the responses remain for others. I am a different language from all that is mainstream.
• Do you think a writer needs to be a reader of literature to write an influential article?
•• Literature is part of a huge collection in the formation of the intellectual, but writing is a revolutionary act that must detach from the familiar and be independent of any school. I am a bored person; I hate the prison of novels and memorizing poetry, preferring instead to read intellectual books. Once, my wife asked me: What have you benefited, as you say, from being the most knowledgeable person in the country about the ideas of political Islam? My answer: I am a Muslim who loves to see his religion in its correct form.
• A writer you have read and who left an impact on your style.
•• Internationally: My professor and supervisor of my doctoral thesis, "Peter Trudgill," who is the second linguistics professor in the history of this science after Noam Chomsky.
Arabically: No one.
Saudi: The late writer known as (Ali Saad Al-Mousa).
My wish is to be on the verge of death to eulogize him as I knew him.
• Do you still believe in the word and its ability to change?
•• What is this question? My answer: A famous broadcast from the West has done to Saudis in a few years what all Saudi journalists could not do in a quarter of a century.
